The aim of the Finnish universities is to streamline certificate-based admission and to ensure that the study opportunities are not unnecessarily restricted by subject choices made at general upper secondary level. This would ease the pressures experienced by general upper secondary students. About half of all new university students are admitted on the basis of their certificates.

Harri Jalonen, Professor of Social and Health Management has received the University of Vaasa Science Communication Award. The award was given in recognition of his contribution to the popularisation and communication of science and his contribution to the dialogue in society. In addition, the University of Vaasa granted three honorary mentions for excellent science communication to Professor Peter Gabrielsson and researchers Niranjan Sapkota and Leena Kunttu. The awards were given at the Mission Possible science day at the University of Vaasa.

Josu Allan Takala, Professor of Industrial Management at the University of Vaasa, died in Tampere on 23 February 2023 after a long illness. He was born on 2 February 1955.
