The sea is crucial for us. Have you ever wondered how goods and raw materials get to your area? The answer is the sea – almost 90% of the world’s goods traffic is transported by sea. At sea, fuel oil is consumed in large amounts: A loaded container ship burns about 150 tonnes of heavy fuel oil per day, which is unsustainable from an environmental perspective. Therefore, carbon dioxide emissions from shipping must be reduced.

Increasing pressure for social sustainability and upcoming reporting requirements can become a bureaucratic burden for businesses. A new EU-funded project DEI4SME aims to develop an effective tool to empower small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) to address Diversity, Equality, and Inclusion (DEI) activities. When using the tool and open access learning materials created, educators in higher and vocational education institutions will be able to equip learners to manage DEI issues in business.

In his doctoral dissertation at the University of Vaasa, Sayawu Diaba presents unique machine-learning algorithms for evaluating, detecting, and classifying cyberattacks on smart grids.

The City of Vaasa, the University of Vaasa and the Ostrobothnia Chamber of Commerce are exploring the development of Vaasa higher education network by consolidating the ownership structure around Vaasa University of Applied Sciences (VAMK). Possible changes in ownership are being considered in an effort to establish a larger, more influential and higher profile unit at the regional, national and international levels, thus strengthening higher education and RDI in the region.
