Four Finnish higher education providers, the University of Vaasa, Aalto University, Tampere University and Åbo Akademi University, are engaged in establishing a research consortium together with the companies Wärtsilä and AGCO Power and other corporate and research partners. The research consortium sets out to create a roadmap towards low-emission seafaring technology and work machines and realise these objectives through innovation. The consortium also aims at developing flexible fuel technologies and estimating the effects of these on the entire value chain of the industries involved. Business Finland is financing the preparation project.

What role should public organisations play in innovation activities? Forthcoming dissertation by Antti Mäenpää is looking at the role of public organisations as innovation agents. Current European regional development strategy, Smart specialisation, is suggesting that public organisations should step up their game in regional innovation activities and look for new solutions, which are based on the new use of current regional activities.

The way we produce and consume goods heavily relies on limited natural resources and produce negative side effects such as waste and pollution. In order to become future-fit, businesses need to integrate these increasing pressures and become aligned with a circular economy blueprint, in which waste is designed out and products and materials can generate additional value by being recirculated.
