Jyrki Vuorinen appointed as vice-rector of education

The board of the University of Vaasa has appointed Jyrki Vuorinen as the university's new vice-rector of education. His five-year term of office will begin on 1 March.

- I am very pleased to get Jyrki Vuorinen into our management team. We will have a competent and experienced academic director and professor to take the university forward and to strengthen it together with the university community, says Rector Minna Martikainen.

Ph.D. Vuorinen currently works as the Dean at the Faculty of Information Technology and Communication at the University of Tampere. In addition, he has previously worked at Tampere University of Technology as a dean and vice-dean of two different faculties. Professor Vuorinen has a doctorate in engineering, and his speciality is materials technology. Between 1998 and 2000, he worked as a researcher at the Los Alamos National laboratory in the United States.

The vice-rector of education is responsible for organising services that support studies, degree programmes and teaching, as well as the strategic development of these areas. He develops activities considering, among other things, changes in learning and educational needs, the principles of continuous learning, digital development trends, and the goals the university has set for internationalisation. The vice-rector also actively represents the university in national and international networks. The vice-rector acts as the rector's deputy and is a member of the university's management team.

- I am a person who is inspired by changes and I look forward to taking on my new role at the University of Vaasa, which is a new environment for me. In my five-year period, I want to build an even stronger University of Vaasa together with the university community and its stakeholders, says Vuorinen.

The board decided on the new vice-rector during its meeting on 30 December 2022.
