New Students

Congratulations and welcome to the University of Vaasa!

You are one of the lucky students to begin their studies at the University of Vaasa. Our University is a multidisciplinary university with four Schools for research and teaching. When you start your studies at our University, we welcome you to become a member of our academic community on the most beautiful, maritime campus in Finland. According to our students, we share a great feeling of solidarity and offer a beautiful learning environment and professional staff to contribute to your study experience. You will find useful information to plan and start your studies at our University in these pages.

Accepting the offered study place

Master's Degree Students

You have to confirm that you will accept the opening by following the instructions sent to you via Studyinfo. Please note that the confirmation is binding. If the confirmation has not been done by the given deadline, you will forfeit your right to enroll in the programme.

If you were conditionally accepted to the University of Vaasa based on an unfinished degree, you need to send the officially certified copies of your Degree Certificate and the final Transcript of Records to the University by the given deadline. If you fail to submit the documents to the University on time or you fail to meet the admission criteria (such as GPA or thesis grade requirement), your study place in the programme will be cancelled.

If you were conditionally accepted to the University of Vaasa due to not meeting the country-specific requirements (in rolling admission), you need to meet these requirements by the given deadline. Instructions will be sent to you by email together with your acceptance details.

The international Master's programmes offered by the University of Vaasa are included in the one study place per term provision. As per the Universities Act (558/2009) you may accept only one study place leading to a higher education degree in Finland during one academic term. The academic term (1.8.-31.12. and 1.1.-31.7.) is the set framework for implementation. Please also note that, similarly, if you are admitted into more than one international Master's programme at the University of Vaasa, you can only register and pursue studies in one of them during the academic term.

Exchange students

Exchange students do not have to confirm their study place.

International Tutoring

Every international student is appointed an international tutor who will contact you before your arrival. Tutors are fellow students who help the new students to adjust to the Finnish society and the academic environment. You can consider the international tutor as your first friend in Finland. Do not hesitate to ask them any questions - your tutor is happy to answer them!

Tutor's task is to assist you in getting settled and to create a possibility to meet other students during different events. Though they can help you in many things, the tutors do not give any study counselling, nor assist with visa related matters. For those issues please turn to the Mobility Services, Admission Services, or the study counsellor in your Master's programme.

"The tutoring program has been one of the highlights since I arrived in Vaasa. Everything from all their help at the students' arrival day to all these events the tutors create/share are just terrific."

- Hugo Van der Put da Silva, exchange student, spring 2020
