Hydrogen Next Future Market Ecosystem

Finland aims to achieve carbon neutrality by 2035 and produce 10% of the EU’s clean hydrogen by 2030. H2Nexus examines how hydrogen markets and energy ecosystems co-evolve, combining techno-economic modelling with a market-shaping perspective. The project analyzes business models, pricing, governance, regulations, and adoption barriers across sectors such as steel, fertilizers, shipping, and aviation. Its findings will support science, policy, and business decision-making through new datasets, models, and market development insights.

Project description

The H2Nexus project addresses the need for coordinated, systemic transformation of energy systems, particularly the development of scalable markets and institutional frameworks for a sustainable hydrogen economy to support Finland’s ambitious goal of carbon neutrality and producing 10% of the EU’s clean hydrogen. The approach combines techno-economic modeling with markets and institutional analysis to explore how business model innovation, pricing mechanisms, and ecosystem governance co-evolve with emerging hydrogen technologies. The project’s benefit lies in advancing academic understanding in fields such as energy systems, market shaping and business, while also providing actionable insights for policymakers and industry. Compared to existing efforts that often remain confined to narrow technological niches, this research emphasizes the co-evolution of markets and ecosystems, ensuring that technical feasibility is matched by economic and institutional viability.
