CircularLife4Furn

CircularLIFE4Furn helps European furniture SMEs transition to circular business models by addressing gaps in regulatory readiness, skills, data, and collaboration. The project combines sector analysis, practical CBM tools and training, company transition plans and pilots, while building Communities of Practice and engaging European and national networks. Its goal is to turn circularity from a regulatory requirement into a competitive business practice that reduces carbon and resource use while supporting biodiversity.

Project description

The European furniture sector, with over 130,000 companies and more than one million employees, faces a critical transition towards sustainability driven by the Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR), Digital Product Passport (DPP), and the Circular Economy Action Plan. Predominantly composed of SMEs, SMCs and microenterprises, the sector lacks readiness in future regulatory compliance, data systems, skills, and collaboration needed to adopt Circular Business Models(CBM).

CircularLIFE4Furn addresses these gaps by empowering companies to mainstream CBM as a driver of competitiveness, climate neutrality, and biodiversity protection. The project delivers an integrated approach: mapping literature, sectoral readiness and barriers(WP2), providing practical guidance through a CBM Adoption Handbook, Digital Toolkit, and Online Academy(WP3), and building capacity via train-the-trainer programmes and national workshops. It further engages 80 companies in co-designed transition plans, with 12 implementing full pilots that measure impacts on carbon reduction, resource efficiency, and biodiversity protection(WP4).

To strengthen market uptake and policy alignment, CircularLIFE4Furn establishes Communities of Practice, engages with EU and national networks (EEN, ECESP, ECCP, EFIC), and produces quarterly policy briefs and recommendations(WP5). Communication and outreach activities include thematic webinars, national and international forums, and an After-LIFE plan for scaling and continuity(WP6).

By equipping SMEs with tools, skills, and collaborative frameworks, CircularLIFE4Furn goes beyond regulatory compliance, positioning circularity as the norm in the EU furniture and furnishings sectors and supporting the LIFE Programme’s objectives for climate mitigation, resource efficiency, and biodiversity protection.
