The calculation is used to identify energy-saving and emission-reduction needs and opportunities. In 2021, the University of Vaasa's carbon footprint was estimated to be 882 tonnes of carbon dioxide. It was made up of the following components: real estate 211,331 kg CO2-eq (24%), waste and sanitation 61,819 kg CO2-eq (7%), procurement 531,597 kg CO2-eq (60%), travel 26,151 24,597 kg CO2-eq (3%).(3%), fleet 1,360 kg CO2-eq (0.2%), library 23,430 kg CO2-eq (3%), laboratories 1,309 kg CO2-eq (0.1%), and catering and student and staff lunches 24,597 kg CO2-eq (3%).
