A University of Vaasa researcher, Klaus Grobys, investigates how the uncertainty in the Bitcoin market reacts if Bitcoin is subject to hacking incidents – or so-called cyberattacks. The study finds two effects on Bitcoin volatility – an immediate effect and a delayed effect. The proposed model could potentially serve as a tool for investors that are active in the derivative market for cryptocurrencies.

University of Vaasa has appointed Professor Martin Meyer Vice Rector of the University of Vaasa responsible for international relations and Director of InnoLab. Meyer is tasked with strengthening the university's international relations, funding and networking. The improvement and management of the well-established research activities via the InnoLab research platform play an important role in Meyer's work.

The University of Vaasa granted the Teaching Act of the Year and Research Act of the Year awards during the anniversary celebrations on 27 January. The Teaching Act of the Year 2020 award was granted to the support and development team for digital teaching. Suvi Karirinne, director of the research platform VEBIC that focuses on energy and sustainable development, received the Research Act of the Year 2020 award. The Student Union of the University of Vaasa awarded the Good Teacher recognition to Niina Nissilä, university lecturer in communication studies.

The University of Vaasa's international Master's programmes attracted applicants from all over the world. In the call for applications that ended last week, a total of 1,402 applications from 83 different countries were received for Master's programmes. It is over 23 per cent more than last year (2020: 1137). Six Master’s programmes were open for applications, and the number of individual applicants increased by more than 19 per cent from last year.

Director General Atte Jääskeläinen from the Ministry of Education and Culture, who gave the main speech, emphasised that higher education needs additional resources so that the number of people with higher education will rise to meet the target.

Universities have continued to prepare student admissions for 2021, taking into account the current coronavirus situation. The aim is to organise the spring and summer entrance examinations on campuses or other physical facilities. Applicants will be informed of how the entrance examinations will be carried out by 16 March.
