In its meeting on 20 May, the University Collegium of the University of Vaasa appointed members who come from outside the university community to the board of directors for the period 2022–2025. The appointed board members have high-level business experience, academic demonstration, as well as a genuine interest in developing the Finnish university and scientific communities. Furthermore, their expertise is strongly linked to the focus areas of the university.

What does the energy future of the different regions in Europe look like, and who can influence it? The vision for the energy transition and the transition towards renewable energy is not just a matter for the state and industry; it is important to consider different perspectives. Support for this is provided by the new EU funded project RIPEET developing and testing methods for co-creation and engagement of different actors in energy transition visioning and research. Simultaneously, the project promotes responsible research and innovation.

The University of Vaasa has launched a new fundraising campaign. The target of the campaign is to collect EUR 5 – 7 million of private funds for the matched funding scheme by the Finnish state. Each donated euro up to 11 million euros is matched by up to 2.5 euros by the state. A key objective with the fundraising campaign is to build long-term strategic partnerships.

The students who gathered to party in the student apartments in Palosaari and the city centre over the weekend have mainly been foreign exchange students at the University of Vaasa who only spend a short time in Finland.

Machine learning, a subfield of artificial intelligence is poised to revolutionise cancer management. Rasheed Alabi’s doctoral research at the University of Vaasa shows machine learning techniques could assist in the proper management of tongue cancer.
