According to the latest Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings by Subject, the University of Vaasa’s research quality is the highest in Finland in engineering and second in business. The university also ranks highly internationally – the quality of research in these fields is among the top 20 in Europe, and among the top 50 in the world in business.

The University of Vaasa's Big Heart Award has been awarded to Heini Pensar, University Lecturer in Human Resources Management. Big Heart award is an equality award given by the University of Vaasa. The award was given on 12 February at a Valentine's Day event for the whole university.

The City of Vaasa, the University of Vaasa, and the Ostrobothnia Chamber of Commerce have explored the development of Vaasa's higher education network by consolidating the ownership structure around Vaasa University of Applied Sciences (VAMK). The potential changes in ownership aim to create a larger, more impactful, and more visible regional, national, and international entity that strengthens higher education and RDI activities in the region.
