Vaasa leads the way – university, city and businesses accelerating climate solutions together

Image
Vaasa has been selected as the European Green Leaf City 2026. This recognition from the European Commission highlights cities that take concrete and impactful action on climate and environmental challenges. Vaasa stands out not only for its ambitious goal to reach carbon neutrality already in the 2020s, but also for how this work is done – together. What makes Vaasa unique is its strong ecosystem. Universities, businesses, and the public sector work closely together, connecting research, innovation, and education. The University of Vaasa plays a central role in this collaboration.

The Vaasa region is the leading energy technology cluster in the Nordics. Local companies are developing cutting-edge solutions in energy efficiency, electrification, hydrogen, batteries, and smart grids. The university supports this with research-based expertise and by developing new solutions for sustainable business and future energy systems.

Our shared goal is clear: to reduce emissions, strengthen energy system resilience, and accelerate the transition to a carbon-neutral society. The Green Leaf year further strengthens this collaboration. Research, expertise, and student involvement all support companies in reaching their climate goals and building new capabilities.

– The most impactful solutions are created together. Joint research, student projects and theses help companies take real climate action while strengthening regional competitiveness. At the same time, the university generates knowledge that supports sustainable decision-making, says Minna Martikainen, Rector of the University of Vaasa.

Climate commitment – collaboration towards measurable climate action

A key initiative of the Green Leaf year is the Vaasa Climate Commitment, which invites companies and organisations to set clear, measurable climate targets. Participants receive expert support and join a network for shared learning and co-creation. The goal is for the entire region to take visible climate action well before 2030.

This collaboration also creates valuable opportunities for students who work with companies through projects, theses, and internships. International students bring global perspectives. Researchers and students work as active partners for companies, helping turn knowledge into practical solutions.

– Joint development is an investment in the future. We warmly invite companies to join us, Research Director Taina Tukiainen concludes.
