The University of Vaasa has once again claimed the top spot in the performance ranking of Finnish universities. The ranking assessed the development of universities between 2018 and 2024 across five key areas: research publications, completed degrees, international staff, international applicants and international students.

The performance ranking is part of the annual Finnish Higher Education Institutions report published by the Finnish Institute for Educational Research. It is based on openly available statistics (Vipunen.fi), and includes all Finnish universities.

– This result clearly shows that our ambitious growth strategy is working. We have made determined efforts together to achieve this growth – my warmest thanks to our staff, students, and all our stakeholders for this great achievement, says Minna Martikainen, Rector of the University of Vaasa.

The University of Vaasa ranked highest in the development of research publication output and showed strong growth in the number of international staff and applicants. External research funding has increased the most percentage-wise at the University of Vaasa – in particular, the amount of international funding has grown significantly.

The university saw the largest percentage growth in the number of new degree students among all Finnish universities. In addition, it had the highest graduate employment rate: 91% of students who graduated in 2022 were employed in 2023. The University of Vaasa also had the lowest total costs per student and per credit earned.

The university also topped the performance ranking in the previous two years.
