University of Vaasa to have a strong presence at EnergyWeek

The University of Vaasa is a partner of the annual EnergyWeek, which will be held in Vaasa City Hall from 11 to 14 March 2024. The University will be visible at EnergyWeek in many different forums, either hosting or presenting at various seminars and events.  The University will also have its own exhibition stand. Please register as visitor & come and meet us!

On Monday 11 March, Minna Martikainen, Rector of the University of Vaasa, will be a panelist at the Energy & Climate Seminar. The seminar offers an interesting mix of speakers from both the public sector and business. The panel will discuss how to enable the EU and Finland to be competitive in green transition investments. The panel will look at issues such as skills shortages, RDI funding and the challenges of approval processes.  In addition to Minna Martikainen, the panellists are Tomas Häyry, Sami Kivioja, Pekka Tiitinen, Kim Berg, Atte Harjanne, Janne Jukkola and Sirpa Pietikäinen. The panel will be moderated by Jussi Kärki, editor-in-chief of Talouselämä. The discussion will be held in Finnish.

On Tuesday 12 March, starting at noon, a seminar on Zero Emission Data Centres will take place to discuss how data centres use energy, how they can reduce their emissions and increase their efficiency. The topic is related to the WSTAR project, a joint project between the University of Vaasa, Åbo Akademi, Vaasa University of Applied Sciences and Novia University of Applied Sciences, which is developing a research infrastructure at Technobothnia for research on zero emission data centre solutions. Associate Professor Petri Välisuo from the University of Vaasa will give a presentation.

Later in the afternoon, there will be a panel discussion on Energy transition & cyber security. The discussion is hosted by the VEBIC research platform and the REDISET project. The panel discussion will be organised by Petra Berg, Linda Turtola, Mazaher Karimi and Bahaa Eltahawy.

At the same time on Tuesday afternoon, there will also be a Powered by Space seminar, with an opening speech by Professor and Research Platform Director Heidi Kuusniemi from the University of Vaasa. Kuusniemi will also take part in a panel discussion at the seminar. The event is organised by the University's Digital Economy Research Platform and the Kvarken Space Center.

On Wednesday 13 March, you are cordially invited to the University of Vaasa's Research Exhibition of Energy, which will be held in the Vaasa Art Hall. In addition to scientific posters, there will be refreshments and a good opportunity to talk to the university's researchers face-to-face. Two awards will also be announced: the University of Vaasa Science Communication Award and the University of Vaasa Innovation Award. The event is organised in collaboration with the University's three research platforms VEBIC, Digital Economy and InnoLab.

On Thursday 14 March, the University of Vaasa will participate in three different events: the Energy for sustainable future seminar, the Gas 2 seminar and the EnergyAcademy event.

The University of Vaasa's Energy for sustainable future seminar will start at 12:30 pm. Professor Timo Rothovius, Associate Professor Heidi Hirsto, Postdoctoral Researcher Petra Berg from the University of Vaasa and Suvi Monni, Senior Specialist at Sitowise will give presentations at the event. Topics include energy as an investment, communicating sustainability, navigating sustainability in renewable energy, and speed-blindness in sustainability projects.

At the Gas Seminar 2: Using e-fuels to decarbonise ecosystems, Carolin Nuortila, researcher in energy technology at the University of Vaasa, will co-present with Kaj Portin from Wärtsilä Finland on Towards greener marine transport - R&D cooperation between business and academia. Nuortila will also participate in a panel discussion.

The joint EnergyAcademy of Vaasa universities and companies will take place at 13.00. Raine Hermans, Dean of the School of Technology and Innovations at the University of Vaasa, will be participating a panel where students have the opportunity to roast the Energy Academy professionals with the trickiest questions.

You can find the University's exhibition stand at various locations during EnergyWeek from Tuesday to Thursday. The stand will feature presentations, activities and researchers according to the theme of the day. Remeber to register as visitor for EnergyWeek!
