Mika Grundström appointed as vice-rector of research

The board of the University of Vaasa has appointed Mika Grundström as the university's new vice-rector of research. His five-year term of office will begin on 8 March.

– I am very satisfied with the expertise that Mika Grundström brings to our university. He is particularly distinguished in the construction of research funding entities up to the EU level. In addition, Grundström brings practical know-how with his previous strong business background, says Rector Minna Martikainen.

PhD. Grundström currently works as an industry professor at the University of Tampere. In addition, he has previously worked as the Dean of the Faculty of Computing and Electrical Engineering at the Tampere University of Technology and prior that as director at the School of Information Sciences at the University of Tampere. He has a long experience in management positions in various roles in Nokia Oyj's research and product development functions. Grundström has a doctorate in engineering, and his main area of focus is telecommunications technology and signal processing.

– The platform approach created by the University of Vaasa is unique and shows the multidisciplinarity and agility the university is famous for. I am thrilled to be a part of this world-class research endeavour. Energy research, innovation and digital economy are topics that are well grounded in basic research and respond to the immediate societal need to find new solutions. International cooperation and networking are an increasing trend in the research world and this is a sector where Vaasa can thrive, says Grundström.

The vice-rector of research is responsible for the strategic development of research, innovation and commercialisation activities, and doctoral education. He promotes the principles of responsible and open science, international research activities and the international and national development of research funding. The vice-rector also actively represents the university in national and international research networks. The vice-rector acts as the rector's deputy and is a member of the university's management team.

The board decided on the new vice-rector during its meeting on 19 January 2023.
