Checklist for the Enrolled

We have compiled a checklist for Open University students regarding course enrolment. Detailed enrolment instructions are available on our website.

  • Before enrolling, please review our course offerings and check the specific completion and scheduling details of each course. Online teaching is often scheduled, meaning each course has a defined completion period (e.g., exams, assignment deadlines). Some courses may require mandatory attendance in online lectures (especially language and communication studies).

  • Each course has a limited number of places (including online courses), and places are filled in the order of registration.

  • Enrollment in our courses is binding – you can find more information in our payment and cancellation terms. Please note that in university studies, 1 ECTS credit corresponds to approximately 27 hours of work (including lectures, independent study, information retrieval, group work, writing, exams, etc.). When planning your studies, please take this into account (actual workload may vary by individual and course).

  • Once your enrollment is accepted, you will receive a confirmation email with a payment link for the course fee. The payment link is valid for 24 hours.

  • After paying the course fee, you will be granted a study right (study rights are processed on weekdays during office hours). After this, you can activate your University of Vaasa user account, enable MFA authentication, and your student email account will be created. More detailed instructions can be found on the Instructions for Using the IT Systems page.

  • If you registered for an open university implementation with a code beginning with AY, you will receive more detailed study-related instructions from the Open University (including instructions for registering on the Moodle learning platform) in an info message approx. 1–2 days before the implementation begins. Communication regarding implementations integrated into degree education is the responsibility of the teacher, and the Open University does not send separate info messages about these implementations. All communication will be sent to the student email account you receive after your study right has been granted (in the format username@student.uwasa.fi). Info messages are sent as studies begin, so you will not receive information for all courses at the same time.

  • It is important to read the info message carefully – if you have not received the info message by the announced start date, first check your student email's spam folder. If the email is not there either, please contact the Open University student services immediately at avoinyo@uwasa.fi.

  • Once the course is completed, the result will be registered in the Peppi student information system. You can download a digitally verified transcript of records from your Peppi student desktop or request one from the Open University student services. Certificates are not automatically sent to students after course completion.
