The University of Vaasa’s multidisciplinary week at Wasa Future Festival, held from 11 to 15 August, sparked engaging discussions, deepened collaboration, encouraged finding joint solutions to the challenges of a changing world, and brought forward new initiatives. The week-long future-focused event, featuring panel discussions, speeches, and workshops, attracted several government ministers to Vaasa and gathered a significant group of domestic and international decision-makers from society and business, as well as representatives from the academic world.

Finland needs investment-driven growth, and foreign direct investment plays a key role in achieving it. On Thursday 14 August, the University of Vaasa will host an event at Wasa Future Festival where Minister for European Affairs and Ownership Steering Joakim Strand, Partner at Borenius Attorneys Casper Herler, CEO of Gasgrid Finland Olli Sipilä, Member of Parliament Matias Mäkynen, Deputy CEO of Elo Jonna Ryhänen, and University of Vaasa Rector Minna Martikainen will discuss how Finland can be made a leading international investment destination.

How can we accelerate research and development of carbon-neutral energy systems, strengthen the competitiveness of companies, and at the same time promote sustainable economic growth? The Vaasa Energy Transition Valley could offer concrete solutions to these questions. The topic was discussed on Tuesday 12 August at an event organised by the University of Vaasa as part of the Wasa Future Festival.

An international career in professional sports has not prevented Veera Kauppi from completing her degree. The successful floorball star graduated in July with a Master of Arts in Communication Studies from the University of Vaasa. Kauppi plays in Sweden’s top league in Umeå for Team Thorengruppen and has won medals in several World Championships. She has also been named the world’s best female player.

In July, the otherwise quiet campus of the University of Vaasa has come alive thanks to the Finnish language and culture summer course, which brings together 30 international students from across the globe. This three-week intensive course offers participants the opportunity to develop their Finnish language skills and explore Finnish culture and society in a practical and immersive way. The course is organized in collaboration with the University of Vaasa’s language centre Linginno and the Finnish National Agency for Education.
