Focused on sustainable business, energy and society

The University of Vaasa’s strategy is to generate new energy for society. We are an international and multidisciplinary research university focused on sustainable business, energy, and society. Our strategic focus areas – the energy transition, business renewal, and societal transformation – guide our research and education towards impactful solutions.

We work in close collaboration with businesses and society at the heart of the Nordic region’s largest energy technology hub. Through research, innovation, and partnerships, we promote the use of clean energy, responsible consumption and production, and sustainable economic growth.

Research

Research in our focus areas is internationally high-quality. Our key themes are sustainable business, energy and society. Via our research platforms, we conduct challenge- and phenomenon-driven, interdisciplinary
research that makes a difference in the real world, addressing global societal challenges. We emphasise the importance of engaging collaborators from industry and society. Given our location at the heart of Northern Europe's largest energy and environment cluster, it is especially our responsibility to spearhead the promotion of sustainability.

We carry out ethical research that is both sustainable and responsible. We are committed to the principles of open science.

Education

We offer a future-oriented study experience that prepares students for working life through top-quality teaching, cutting-edge research, and modern learning environments. Our students benefit from the latest technology, digital tools, engaging project-based learning, flexible study paths, and personalised guidance. Our foundation is built on equality, equity, and a strong sense of community.

We are committed to supporting the integration of both domestic and international graduates into Finnish working life and society. As a key partner to the City of Vaasa, the regional innovation ecosystem, and especially the energy technology sector, we play an active role in regional development.

We provide our students with comprehensive support services – from academic advising and mentoring to wellbeing and career development – proactively and individually.

Cooperation

We aim to be a valued research partner in both regional and global innovation ecosystems. Partnerships enhance the impact of our research, support the development of new solutions, and promote the transfer of knowledge into society. Our location at the heart of Northern Europe’s largest energy and environmental technology hub strengthens our mission: to drive the energy transition, mitigate climate change, and promote sustainable business. This mission is also reflected in how we build partnerships and engage internationally – with purpose, responsibility, and impact.

An open, inclusive and international community

Our success is built on the expertise and dedication of our researchers, teachers, and experts. We actively develop our work community by investing in well-being, career development, and a diverse working environment where community spirit, equality, and inclusiveness are at the core.

We are actively involved in both international and national research and education networks and partnerships. We promote the responsible integration of international talent into Finnish society. Our goal is that by 2030, 35% of our staff and students will be international.
