Symposium 2027

1st Call for Papers 

VAKKI Communication Research Association arranges a Symposium on February 11–12, 2027 under the theme of Communication and Openness.

Openness is one of the central communication ideals of our time, but also one of its key challenges. It can refer to, for example, the accessibility of information, transparency, opportunities for participation, and the inclusion of diverse perspectives and experiences. Organizations are expected to engage in transparent decision-making, researchers are encouraged to embrace open science and data sharing, and digital platforms are, at least in principle, built around the ideal of open interaction.

At the same time, communication inevitably involves boundaries, selection, and exclusion. Privacy protection, copyright, information security, and confidentiality require that not everything can be made visible or accessible to everyone. Openness can also become a source of risk. Moreover, in digital environments, algorithms and content moderation practices shape what we see and what remains unseen. What does openness mean in different communication contexts? Where are its boundaries, and who defines them? How are the ideals of openness, visibility, and participation realized in today’s media, organizational, and platform society?

We welcome you to discuss communication and openness in the symposium in February. We invite proposals for section presentations and workshops that consider the theme in different organisational, workplace and media contexts, for example from the following perspectives: 

• Transparency and accountability in communication 
• Open science, open data, and the accessibility of knowledge 
• Privacy, data protection, and the ethical boundaries of communication 
• Visibility, invisibility, and algorithmic power 
• Content moderation, gatekeeping, and platform governance 
• Authenticity, credibility, and strategic visibility 
• Self-disclosure, publicity, and privacy 
• Data breaches, surveillance, and data-driven communication environments 
• Plurality of voices, dialogue, and participation 
• Voice, silence, and practices of silencing 
• Recognition, representation, and inclusion 
• Framing, discursive struggles, and the visibility of meanings 

Please submit your section presentation abstract (max. 3,000 characters excluding references) via electric form by November 17, 2026. The papers will be selected based on the scientific quality of the abstract. Notifications of acceptance will be sent out by November 27, 2026. The abstracts can be written in Finnish, Swedish, English, or German. The final presentation should be in the same language as the abstract. 

At this stage, we also welcome proposals for workshops. The purpose of the workshops is to provide participants with a more informal setting to exchange intellectual ideas and practical experiences on specific topics. Please submit your proposal for a workshop theme as an attachment (max. 3000 characters in rtf or doc format) to symposium[at]vakki.net by October 5, 2026. Please, state in the proposal whether you will call for abstracts for workshop presentations or invite the speakers yourself. Further details on workshop registration and the plenary speakers will be provided in the second Call for Papers in October 2026.

The symposium will be held on site in Vaasa. The working languages of the symposium are Finnish, Swedish, English and German. After the symposium, presenters are invited to submit their papers to the VAKKI publication, which is a JUFO 1-level peer-reviewed open access publication. The publication will be published at the end of 2027.

1. Rundbrief mit Call for Papers

Der Forscherverein VAKKI der Universität Vaasa in Finnland organisiert 11.–12.2.2027 in Vaasa ein Symposium mit dem Thema Kommunikation und Offenheit. (Nähere Beschreibung des Themas auf Englisch oben.)

Wir bitten jetzt um Einreichung von Abstracts für Sektionsvorträge. Bitte senden Sie Ihr Abstract (bis zu 3000 Zeichen ausschließlich Literaturangaben) über das elektronische Formular bis zum 17.11.2026. Die Vorträge werden auf Basis der wissenschaftlichen Qualität der Abstracts ausgewählt. Spätestens am 27.11.2026 benachrichtigen wir über die Annahme der Vorträge. Die Sprache der Abstracts kann Deutsch, Englisch, Finnisch oder Schwedisch sein.

Wir bitten auch um Vorschläge für Workshop-Themen. Die Workshops bieten den Teilnehmenden eine flexiblere Umgebung, die zu Diskussion und Erfahrungsaustausch zu einem abgegrenzten Thema einlädt. Bitte senden Sie Ihren Vorschlag für ein Workshop-Thema als Anhang (max. 3000 Zeichen im rtf- oder doc-Format) per E-Mail bis zum 5.10.2026 an die Adresse symposium[at]vakki.net. Im 2. Rundbrief Mitte Oktober 2026 wird dann über die Anmeldung zu den Workshops sowie über die Plenarvortragenden informiert. 

Das Symposium wird vor Ort in Vaasa gehalten. Die Arbeitssprachen des Symposiums sind Finnisch, Schwedisch, Englisch und Deutsch. Nach dem Symposium haben die Vortragenden die Möglichkeit, ein Manuskript für eine peer-reviewte open access -Publikation (JUFO1) einzureichen, die Ende des Jahres 2027 herausgegeben wird.
