Virtualized Technology Assisted Situational Awareness and Mul- tilayer Resilient Control for Microgrids

Finland’s electricity system increasingly relies on distributed renewable generation, digital automation, and interconnected cyber-physical infrastructure. This supports decarbonization, but it also increases vulnerability to disturbances, cyber incidents, and cascading failures.ViSMART-MG will build an integrated resilience architecture for microgrids and distribution networks. It combines real-time situational awareness, resilient distributed control, and software-defined (virtualized) protection and automation, and it will validate the solutions in real-time hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) demonstrations. The project studies how physics-based and machine-learning methods can be combined to monitor, detect, and diagnose faults and cyberattacks; how a unified distributed control approach can keep microgrids safe under simultaneous physical faults and cyberattacks; and how virtualized protection and control (VPC) can improve the flexibility, scalability, resilience, and performance of conventional protection, automation, and control.
