Introduction

My research concentrates on cognitive-affective human experience. I have focused mostly on experiences with and around technology, and as a trained artist, I am engaged in observing the role of higher order thought when creating, and creatively utilizing technology, materials and expression. I currently teach: Mind, Communication and Technology; Digital Media Studies; Perspectives on Social Media; Masters thesis seminar; Digital Communication Colloquium; and have a range of guest lectures in the disciplines of Art, Design, Cultural Studies, Business, Cognitive Science, and Communication Studies.

Research

Rebekah Rousi holds a PhD in Cognitive Science with extensive experience of research and teaching in Human-Technology Interaction. Her main research expertise is in User Experience and human experience (semiotics, communication, logic, culture) with technology. Rousi's research interests include: design; embodied interactions and experience; human-robot interaction; human-AI interaction; posthumanism; environmental interactions (e.g., elevator and architectural experience); ethics; emotions; privacy; trust; and sustainability. Rousi also has a background in cultural studies, critical theory and contemporary art. She has trained and practiced as a performance artist and printmaker since 2003.

Teaching

Rousi began her university teaching career in 2006, gaining a Graduate Diploma in Vocational Adult Teacher Education from the Jyväskylä University of Applied Sciences in 2007. Since then, she has taught a broad range of subjects in the Arts and Humanities, Human Sciences (Cognitive Science), Design and Information Systems. She currently leads the Interaction Design major studies stream in Communication Studies. Current courses include: Interaction Design Fundamentals (bachelor level); Interaction Design (master's level); Mind, Communication and Technology; Theories in Communication Studies; Interaction Design Colloquium (2026-2027); and Introduction to Communication Studies (2026-2027).
