As the growth of large companies fades and there are not enough successful medium-sized companies in Finland, attention is turning to young Finnish companies that are looking to international markets for growth from the start. However, the challenge of internationalisation for these companies is their newness, small size, and unfamiliarity with international markets. Overcoming these challenges has usually required considerable resources and skills that young companies lack.

Professor Heidi Kuusniemi has received the University of Vaasa Science Communication Award. In addition, the University of Vaasa granted two honorary mentions for excellent science communication to professors Miadreza Shafie-khah and Sami Vähämaa. The University also granted the University of Vaasa Innovation Award for the first time in its history. It was given to professor Mohammed Elmusrati and project researcher Mahmoud Elsanhoury.

The University of Vaasa is creating a new cooperation model for doctoral researchers and companies or organisations to combine their research interests into a doctoral thesis. The doctoral researcher commits to a four-year doctoral research project jointly funded by the partner company and the University of Vaasa. The CoDoc – Collaborative Doctoral Partnership Model project is funded by the Regional Council of Ostrobothnia.
