As the growth of large companies fades and there are not enough successful medium-sized companies in Finland, attention is turning to young Finnish companies that are looking to international markets for growth from the start. However, the challenge of internationalisation for these companies is their newness, small size, and unfamiliarity with international markets. Overcoming these challenges has usually required considerable resources and skills that young companies lack.

Successive and overlapping crises can lead to a lack of information, a flood of information that overwhelms essential information, or even distorted information. Society needs to be information resilient, that is resistant to crises, including disruptions related to information. EnergyWeek, the most important international energy event in the Nordic countries, took place in Vaasa city hall between 11 and 14 March 2024. This year, the University of Vaasa was an official partner and involved in the various events and seminars in many ways.

The police informed on 15 March 2024 that they have apprehended an individual suspected of preparing a serious crime against life or health. The National Bureau of Investigation has requested the individual to be kept in custody. The police are handling the case and are responsible for communication.

Professor Mohammed Elmusrati and project researcher Mahmoud Elsanhoury were awarded the new University of Vaasa Innovation Award.

Professor Heidi Kuusniemi has received the University of Vaasa Science Communication Award. In addition, the University of Vaasa granted two honorary mentions for excellent science communication to professors Miadreza Shafie-khah and Sami Vähämaa. The University also granted the University of Vaasa Innovation Award for the first time in its history. It was given to professor Mohammed Elmusrati and project researcher Mahmoud Elsanhoury.
The international summer school on entrepreneurship and venturing will take place in Vaasa in August 2024. The three-week academic programme helps students gain essential entrepreneurial knowledge and skills in an international context. The application is now open until 22 May 2024.

The team of the University of Vaasa got to the local final of the 2023-24 CFA Institute Research Challenge. The CFA Institute Research Challenge gathers students, investment industry professionals, publicly traded companies, and corporate sponsors together locally, regionally, and globally for an annual competition.

The University of Vaasa is creating a new cooperation model for doctoral researchers and companies or organisations to combine their research interests into a doctoral thesis. The doctoral researcher commits to a four-year doctoral research project jointly funded by the partner company and the University of Vaasa. The CoDoc – Collaborative Doctoral Partnership Model project is funded by the Regional Council of Ostrobothnia.
