The University of Vaasa and Vaasa University of Applied Sciences have officially established a new higher education consortium today, 26 June 2025. The signing of the shareholder agreement and the restructuring of ownership represent significant milestones in a long-standing and close collaboration that has been developed over the years.

On 5 May 2025, the Vaasa City Council approved a new ownership structure for Vaasa University of Applied Sciences (VAMK Ltd), increasing the University of Vaasa’s ownership share to 70%, with the City of Vaasa retaining 30%. Both institutions will continue to operate under their current names, while a name for the new joint entity will be announced in early autumn.

Through the shareholder agreement and ownership consolidation, the University of Vaasa and Vaasa University of Applied Sciences are forming a strong and internationally attractive higher education group. The consortium aims to strengthen Finland’s growth and global competitiveness, address the national skills shortage, and enhance the societal impact of research.

Long-Term Collaboration Builds Competitiveness

The institutions have already collaborated closely in first-year education in the field of technology. This partnership is exemplified by the joint teaching and research facility Technobothnia, which houses 25 laboratories. Another shared service is the Tritonia Academic Library, which supports research, education, and learning across the institutions. In addition to the University of Vaasa and Vaasa University of Applied Sciences, Yrkeshögskolan Novia is also involved in the operations of Technobothnia and Tritonia.

The preparation process has already generated numerous new ideas for developing collaboration, demonstrating the strong commitment and innovative spirit of both institutions’ staff. This provides a solid foundation for a shared future.

“Our collaboration is expanding and deepening further, supporting the growth and competitiveness of both institutions and strengthening our joint research, development and innovation (RDI) ecosystem. For students, the new consortium offers flexible and personalized study paths, more diverse educational opportunities, and high-quality learning environments – all the way to doctoral education. By the 2030s, our goal is to be an internationally significant and nationally impactful higher education entity,” says Minna Martikainen, Rector of the University of Vaasa.

Impact at Regional, National and International Levels

The joint higher education group aims to become a strong and growing actor in the Finnish higher education landscape. The goal is to use resources more efficiently, build more impactful research groups, and compete more successfully for funding both nationally and internationally.

“We are strengthening collaboration with regional businesses, enhancing RDI activities, and developing research infrastructure – all of which support Finland’s export potential. Together, we are building a future where education, research, and working life meet more effectively and with greater impact,” says Hannu Vahtera, CEO and Rector of Vaasa University of Applied Sciences.
