The Smart Electric Systems (SES) Research Group consists of researchers in the fields of automation, electrical engineering, information technology and telecommunication engineering.

The group researches and develops solutions based on modern information, communication and automation technology for the needs of the energy sector as well as for other fields of society. The applications include smart grids, wireless automation systems and various solutions for well being technology and environment.

The Future Reliable Electricity and Energy Systems Integration smart grid laboratory FREESI is an important part of the energy laboratory complex of the university's VEBIC research platform of energy and sustainable development. 

FREESI has been approved as member of DERlab, an international network of leading research laboratories focusing on distributed energy resources. In addition to the University of Vaasa, the network has 36 members, including universities and research institutions particularly from Europe, but also from around the world.
