General information about applying

Admissions criteria

As our admission decisions are based on the documents that you submit along with your application, it is very important that you prepare your application with care and submit all necessary documents. We only consider applications that contain all the required documents.

You are eligible to apply to our bachelor's programme if you have completed or will complete by 10th July 2025 one of the following qualifications:

  1. Finnish matriculation examination
  2. International Baccalaureate diploma (IB), completed in an accredited IB school
  3. European Baccalaureate examination (EB), completed in an accredited EB school
  4. Deutsches Internationales Abitur diploma (DIA) or Reifeprüfung diploma (RP) in Finland
  5. Upper secondary education completed outside Finland (general or vocational), e.g. high school diploma. The qualification has to give eligibility to university-level studies in the country in question. The level of education and qualification must correspond to the Finnish education that provide eligibility to apply for 180 ECTS Bachelor's degree.

Eligibility for our master's programmes depends on your previous education. As per the Universities Act (558/2009), section 37, you’re eligible if you have:

  1. a relevant bachelor’s degree from a university;
  2. a relevant bachelor’s degree from a university of applied sciences; or
  3. relevant study programme completed abroad which in the awarding country gives eligibility for corresponding higher education.

Each programme has more detailed admissions criteria that cover, for example, success in previous studies and level of language skills.

Finnish universities function under specific legislation, like the Universities Act (558/2009) and the Government Decree on University Degrees. Our quality assurance system has passed the audit by the Finnish Higher Education Evaluation Council (FINHEEC).

University of Vaasa values diversity and is committed to equality in education and across our admissions process. Applicants are selected on the basis of their individual merits, abilities and aptitudes.

First review the general admission criteria. In addition to the general admission criteria, each programme has its own specific admission criteria. Please note that these criteria have been confirmed to apply to the application rounds for the autumn 2025 intakes.

Please, read this page through carefully, especially the information under the programme(s) you are interested in. Kindly note that the admission criteria are not the same in all of the programmes (or majors). Also check the general criteria (e.g. language requirements) and instructions.

University of Vaasa reserves the right to decide whether a degree/qualification and/or higher education institution meet our requirements or not.

Please note that University of Vaasa does not evaluate the relevance of the applicant’s educational background in advance. The evaluation is only done during the processing of the applications with the application and enclosures at hand. Only courses / study modules that have been obtained and are visible on the transcript of records submitted with the application will be considered when evaluating the applicant’s educational background.

Applicants, who have not graduated from the degree used for eligibility to the programme by the time the application period ends, may be conditionally accepted to the programme. In the cases of conditional acceptance, the final acceptance is made and the right to study is granted only when the applicant graduates and receives the degree certificate with the required grades by 10 July 2025. Evidence of the completed degree needs to be presented to the University by 10 July 2025 at 15:00 (UTC+3). Applicants who are conditionally accepted are informed on the conditions, and updated information on the acceptance is sent to the applicants who have submitted a copy of the degree certificate and final transcript of records by the deadline.

You can apply with an unfinished degree in rolling admission and joint admission.

Applicants in both rolling admission and joint/separate admission must meet all the programme-specific criteria of the programme in question in order to be considered for admission. However, there is a difference between the two admissions what comes to defining which of the applicants who meet the admission criteria will be accepted.

Rolling admission, Master's Programmes

Applicants that satisfy the admission criteria will be admitted in the order they apply until the intake is full. The degree must be from a higher education institution located outside Finland.

Selections are made every two weeks, during which the applications received by that time are ranked in order of academic performance. If multiple applicants have achieved the same cumulative grade point average (CGPA), and not all of these applicants can be selected, the applicants will be ranked according to the time of receiving the application.

After the intake is full the remaining applications will be rejected.

All the enclosures need to be submitted to the application form by the time of applying. In case of missing or illegible enclosures, the application will be rejected.

If accepted, the applicant must accept the study place after receiving the offer and pay possible tuition fee by the given deadline. In addition, if country-specific requirements apply to the applicant's degree(s), the applicant must submit the educational documents according to country-specific requirements. The documents must arrive to the University of Vaasa at the latest by the given deadline. The offer is conditional until the tuition fee has been paid and the documents submitted according to the country-specific requirements.

Joint admission, Master's Programme

Applications that satisfy the eligibility and suitability criteria will be put through a subsequent evaluation process that will determine which applicants will be admitted.

The applicants are ranked according to the cumulative grade point average (CGPA) of the degree, including the thesis or final report (if applicable).

If multiple applicants have achieved the same CGPA, and not all of these applicants can be selected, the applicants will be ranked according to the prior studies at bachelor level or higher in the core areas of the programme.

The admission results are published by 28 May 2025.

Rolling admission, Bachelor's Programme

In the rolling admission, the first applicants who satisfy all the admission criteria will be admitted in the order thay apply until the intake is full. Rolling admission may close before the end date announced, if the intake is full before. The rolling admission is open for applicants who have completed their upper secondary education outside Finland.

Separate admission, Bachelor's Programme

The separate admission for Bachelor's programme is for applicants who have completed Finnish matriculation examination, International Baccalaureate diploma (IB) or European Baccalaureate examination (EB) in or outside Finland, or Deutsches Internationales Abitur diploma (DIA) or Reifeprüfung diploma (RP) in Finland. Applicants will be scored based on the points obtained in the Finnish matriculation examination, IB-, EB- or DIA-/RP-degrees.

Financing your studies, tuition fees and scholarships

According to the Finnish Parliament decision, Finnish universities charge tuition fees from non-EU/EEA students. At the University of Vaasa, tuition fee in the international bachelor programme is 10 000 euros per academic year and in the master's programmes 14 000 euros per academic year (starting from the autumn semester 2025). International students must have sufficient funds to pay for tuition fees and cover living expenses during their stay in Finland.

All degree students at the University of Vaasa are responsible for financing their own studies and living expenses. It is essential to ensure that you have adequate funding to cover both living costs and possible tuition fees throughout your entire period of study.

The average monthly living costs for students in Vaasa are around 1000-1100€ or even more, depending on spending habits. Lifestyle, housing choices, and family size significantly impact living costs. Here you can find information about the costs of various things in Finland:

International students who have been issued with a residence permit for studies may work in paid employment for a maximum of 30 hours per week. If you work in Finland, you have to pay taxes on your income. Please note that even if part-time work is allowed, you cannot count on financing your studies solely by working. Finding a suitable part-time or temporary position is very challenging especially if you don't know the local languages. In addition, full-time degree students have the responsibility to study actively and to progress in their studies. To ensure good learning results and study-life balance, you need to arrange adequate funding for the entire period of your studies before leaving your home country.

For further information, please see Studyinfo website.

Tuition fees are charged for the whole duration of studies in the master's programme, until the graduation of the student. Students are required to pay tuition fees unless they meet the criteria mentioned above and provide documentation of it. It is the student's responsibility to provide the university with the necessary documentation.

However, you may qualify for financial aid if you meet the certain requirements. More information may be obtained from Kela.

European Funding Guide assists students (EU citizens) who seek financial aid.

You can also take a look at following external scholarship schemes:

Please note that the University of Vaasa is not involved in any of the above listed scholarship schemes. The study programmes offered by the university are full-time programmes and thus working is not an option when it comes to financing the studies in Finland.

Country-specific requirements for document delivery

The country-specific documentation requirements must be followed first and foremost, if applied to your degree-awarding country. The University of Vaasa makes no exceptions to these requirements. These requirements have been confirmed to apply to the application rounds for the autumn 2025 intakes.

You need to meet the country-specific requirements only after you have been accepted. Therefore, you do not need to meet these requirements when applying. If country-specific requirements apply to your degree(s)/qualification, your acceptance will be conditional until you meet the requirements. If you do not meet the country-specific requirements by the deadline (see below), unfortunately your study place offer will be cancelled.

If you have completed or are completing your degree in Pakistan, you must submit the education documentation awarded by your university. Degree certificates and transcript of records must always be awarded by the main university or a college with degree-awarding status. Educational documents granted by affiliated colleges will not be accepted.

The degree certificate and transcript of records must be certified (attested) by the Higher Education Commission (HEC). Each page of the transcript of records and the degree certificate must be stamped and signed by the HEC. All copies submitted to the University of Vaasa must carry an original stamp by the HEC.

Copies certified before September 20, 2009 are not accepted, as the copies must be verifiable from HEC’s online service.

Further information can be found on the HEC website (www.hec.gov.pk).

You do not have to send the educational documents by post; you can send them by e-mail to admissions(a)uwasa.fi. If you already have attested documents when you apply, we recommend that you attach them directly to the application form by the time of applying.

You must submit your transcript of records electronically, following these instructions:

1. Submit your electronic transcript through an electronic verification service such as TruecopyGradintel or Parchment. The e-verification service does not need to be one of these services. However, University of Vaasa reserves the right to evaluate whether the service used provides a sufficient level of verification or not. Please share the transcript directly from the verification service to the email address admissions(a)uwasa.fi.

2. If your university cannot issue your transcript through an electronic verification service, you can request your university to send your transcript of records to admissions(a)uwasa.fi. The email must be sent from the awarding institution’s official email account that belongs to an entity that is responsible for issuing educational documents at that institution (for example the registrar’s office). The sender’s email address must be verifiable on the awarding institution’s public website. If the email address cannot be found there, the document cannot be accepted. Your university should only send files in pdf format. Please, ask your university to include your application number to the message field.

If you can submit your transcript of records in one of the accepted electronic methods above, you do not need to send a paper copy of your transcript. However, if your university cannot issue a copy of your transcript in one of the electronic ways mentioned, you are required to submit a paper copy this way:

An official transcript of records must be submitted to the University of Vaasa in a sealed envelope. The envelope can be sent by the applicant or by the awarding institution.

The transcript of records must be certified with an original stamp of the institution and an original signature of the certifying officer. The envelope must be sealed with the awarding institution’s official stamp across the back flap.

It is acceptable if the envelope contains other official documents awarded by the institution (e.g. degree certificate and diploma supplement). However, no other enclosures can be submitted with the transcript of records.

Completed degrees

You must submit copies of the official government-granted degree certificate and transcript. The original documents must be verified with an apostille by the authorised body of education of the Russian Federation in your region (Федеральная служба по надзору в сфере образования и науки (Рособрнадзор)). Copies of the apostille-verified original documents must then be officially certified by a notary public. The copies submitted must carry the notary public’s original stamp on each page and the signature of the certifying officer. Alternatively, the notary public can also use a unifying element, meaning that the pages are attached together in a way that certifies them all. In this case only one page must carry the notary public’s original stamp and the signature of the certifying officer.

You do not need to send the documents by post. If you are unable to upload them directly to your online application form, you can also send them by e-mail to admissions(a)uwasa.fi. Please make sure to include all of the pages of the original documents, including the pages’ back sides with any markings (text, stamps, signatures etc.)

If you have completed your degree in Russia but are currently residing outside of Russia and are unable to have your original documents verified with an apostille as instructed above, please contact the Admission Services for possible alternative ways to prove your educational background.
