Are you an international spouse living in the Vaasa region, interested in finding support for settling in both socially and professionally? On the journey to make Vaasa your new home, the Vaasa Spouse Programme will help you to find new friends and develop your professional networks.

The Vaasa Spouse Programme is addressed to all spouses of full-time students and employees in schools and companies in the Vaasa region. The programme is organised by the University of Vaasa in collaboration with the City of Vaasa, TE-services Ostrobothnia and the ELY Centre (the Centre of Economic Development, Transport and the Environment).

Living in Vaasa - fun family activities

The programme focuses on two types of activities: Living in Vaasa and Working in Vaasa. The Living in Vaasa theme focuses on networking & social inclusion and has the whole family in focus. The participating spouses take part in planning and executing the activities.

The activities include for example:

  • Trips and excursions, cultural events, meet & greet events
  • Presenting associations and organisations, free-time activities and hobbies in the region
  • Flexible programme, built in cooperation with the participating spouses
  • Regular Coffee and Chat meetings

Working in Vaasa - build your professional network

The Working in Vaasa activities are focused on career and professional networking. They include:

  • Professional networking
  • Information on regional labour market (TE-services, ELY, EURES), regional and national recruitment fairs
  • The Career Club programme with company collaboration (for selected participants)
  • Personal study and career guidance provided by the SIMHE services
  • CV & cover letter training

EUNICE – European University for Customised Education

The University of Vaasa is part of the EUNICE European network university that brings many international opportunities for students and staff.

EUNICE, the European University for Customised Education, is designed to solve social and economic challenges by strengthening education, research and internationalisation. Together, EUNICE universities from ten European countries are working towards flexible study pathways across national borders.

The EUNICE network's activities include a wide range of educational and research cooperation, based on regional impact, innovation and social sustainability. Some of these activities, such as massive online open courses, are open for everyone. Others, such as exchange possibilities, are targeted to students and staff of EUNICE universities.

Study opportunities to students in Ukrainian universities

In response to the humanitarian crisis in Ukraine, the University of Vaasa offers studies to students at Ukrainian universities. This separate right to study entitles the student to complete individual courses, not an entire degree. The call for applications is aimed at students who have arrived in Finland and have an existing, valid right to study at a Ukrainian university, and whose studies have been discontinued due to the war. These studies are free of charge.

The right to study will be granted based on the applicant’s academic performance, amount and compatibility of their earlier studies with those offered by the University of Vaasa. Applicants should have a sufficient proficiency in English.

Можливості навчання для студентів українських університетів

У відповідь на гуманітарну кризу в Україні Університет Вааса пропонує навчання студентам українських університетів. Це окреме право на навчання дає студенту право прослухати окремі курси, а не отримати повну ступінь. Прийом заявок розрахований на студентів, які прибули до Фінляндії і мають дійсне діюче право на навчання в українському університеті, і навчання яких припинено через війну. Це навчання є безкоштовними.

Право на навчання буде надано на основі академічної успішності заявника, обсягу та сумісності їх попереднього навчання з тим, яке пропонує Університет Вааса. Кандидати повинні володіти англійською мовою на достатньому рівні.

University of Vaasa offers studies in the field of business, technology, administrative sciences and communication studies.

You can apply for any course(s) offered in English. Please, check the timetables and detailed course description for content and possible prerequisites in the Study Guide.

You are eligible to apply if you have arrived in Finland and have an existing, valid right to study at a Ukrainian university, and your studies have been discontinued due to the war. Studies are free of charge.

The required application attachments

  1. A free format description of studies (by the applicant or by the home university)
  • degree you are pursuing,
  • major subject, if applicable,
  • other university level studies,
  • academic performance (e.g. GPA, grades),
  • starting date of your academic studies, and
  • English language skills
  1. Copy of the transcript of records or other relevant study documents, if available
  2. A copy, a photo or a screenshot of passport or ID card

The right to study is valid for a maximum of two years. The right to study covers mainly studies provided in English.

The right to study will be granted based on applicants’ academic performance, the amount and the suitability of previously studies completed. Applicants should have a sufficient proficiency in English.

The right to study will be granted based on the application with required attachments and a possible interview.

Право на навчання діє максимум два роки. Право на навчання охоплює переважно навчання, що надається англійською мовою.

Право на навчання надаватиметься залежно від академічної успішності абітурієнтів, обсягу та відповідності попереднього навчання. Кандидати повинні володіти англійською мовою на достатньому рівні.

Research Act of the Year, Teaching Act of the Year, Science Communication Award and Innovation Award

The University of Vaasa annually awards the University of Vaasa Research Act of the Year and Teaching Act of the Year awards, as well as the University of Vaasa Science Communication Award. In 2024, the University of Vaasa Innovation Award was also given for the first time.

  • The Research Act of the Year is a significant act related to research, such as a high-quality publication or a major research project. Similarly, the Teaching Act of the Year could be an innovative teaching method or course.
  • The University of Vaasa Science Communication Award is given yearly to a staff member or postgraduate student who, during the past year, has excelled in popularising to the general public, found new ways of communicating scientific knowledge to different audiences and/or actively participated as a researcher in the societal debate, while raising awareness of the University of Vaasa and its research.
  • The University of Vaasa Innovation Award was awarded for the first time in 2024. University's aim is to motivate researchers and staff to actively participate in innovation, give recognition for the promotion of innovation and to highlight the impact of innovations made at the university on academia, business and society.
