In a new project, researchers from the University of Vaasa is studying the energy literacy of consumers.

- The purpose of the research is to create information on the consumer action in electricity markets, says Professor Panu Kalmi.The survey data will be collected by using an internet tool. The researchers will combine data on electricity consumption to survey data.

The University of Vaasa granted the Research Act and Teaching Act awards of last year in the anniversary ceremony on Friday 27th of January. Research Act of the Year 2016 award was granted to Assistant Professor Susanna Kultalahti from the Faculty of Business Studies. Professor Pirkko Vartiainen from the Faculty of Philosophy received the Teaching Act of the Year 2016 award.

Juha Kotkatvuori-Örnberg considers risk of an investment in his doctoral dissertation in the field of finance. The research results show that it is possible to apply different statistical methods and information content of time series observations to estimate volatility. The results have importance for example in risk management, hedging strategies and option pricing.

Vitaly Orlov’s dissertation in Finance “Essays on Currency Anomalies” explores one of the most prominent recent phenomena - currency trading.

“Currency trading is a big deal in the world of global investments," says Orlov, "as volume of transactions in the global currency market on some days reaches four trillion U.S. dollars, about 12 times more than that of all the world’s stock markets combined.” His dissertation provides new insights into the nature of the foreign exchange market anomalies.
