During the anniversary celebration on Friday 26 January, the University of Vaasa awarded the research and teaching acts of the year. The Research Act of the Year 2023 was awarded to professors Annukka Jokipii and Harri Jalonen. Programme Manager and Assistant Professor Aušrinė Šilenskytė got the Teaching Act of the Year 2023. In addition, University Teacher Heini Pensar received the Good Teacher award and University Teacher Tahir Ali an honorary mention from the Students' Union of the University of Vaasa.

University of Vaasa is celebrating its 56th anniversary on Friday 26 January under the theme "Energy for the Future". The theme highlights the core of the new strategy of the university – the university’s goal to be a strong university that through its research and education is at the forefront of addressing the energy transition and the move towards a carbon-neutral society. Solving this global issue requires harnessing all the university's fields of research and expertise in sustainable business, technology, and social sciences.

At sea, fuel oil is consumed in large amounts: A loaded container ship burns about 150 tonnes of heavy fuel oil per day, which is unsustainable from an environmental perspective. Therefore, carbon dioxide emissions from shipping must be reduced.

Increasing pressure for social sustainability and upcoming reporting requirements can become a bureaucratic burden for businesses. A new EU-funded project DEI4SME aims to develop an effective tool to empower small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) to address Diversity, Equality, and Inclusion (DEI) activities. When using the tool and open access learning materials created, educators in higher and vocational education institutions will be able to equip learners to manage DEI issues in business.

In 2023, the University of Vaasa achieved success in international rankings. The university also became more attractive to applicants, as master's and doctoral programmes grew in popularity. Additionally, the campus renewal continued, with staff moving into the Ankkuri office building and the renovation of Tervahovi beginning. The year was marked by many positive developments, including the introduction of new Master's degree programmes, significant research projects and funding, and impactful collaborations.
