Dr. Krish Sankaran appointed as director of Vaasa Energy Business Innovation Centre
–It is both a great honour and unique opportunity to build VEBIC into a "Centre for Excellence" in Energy Technology and Innovation. The University of Vaasa is excellently positioned to host such a multidisciplinary research platform in collaboration with the regional, national, and European energy cluster industrial and research partners, says Sankaran.
Sankaran has worked in three different sectors: business, government and academia. In 2011–2014 he worked as a Head of Knowledge Partnerships and as a Global Leadership Fellow at the World Economic Forum in Geneva, Switzerland. In business sector Sankaran has focused on energy, power and infrastructure domains. He has, for example, worked for ABB, Alstom and Swissmetal Industries.
– I am highly convinced that my experience in business, government and academia will play a significant role in building network, developing partnerships, attracting external funding for VEBIC and the University of Vaasa.
Sankaran received doctorate degree in engineering sciences from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology ETH Zurich, Switzerland. He also has an executive master degree in organizational leadership jointly from the Wharton School, Columbia University, INSEAD, and London Business School in collaboration with the World Economic Forum.
–VEBIC is an important step in profiling the University of Vaasa. Internationalization is a key area we are developing. Dr. Krish Sankaran is an innovative leader with extensive international networks in the energy sector, says Jari Kuusisto, Rector of the University of Vaasa.
Multi-disciplinary research and innovation platform
Vaasa Energy Business Innovation Centre or VEBIC is a new multi-disciplinary research and innovation platform hosted by the University of Vaasa. It brings together know how from the research and business communities responding to the global needs of efficient energy production, energy business and sustainable societal development. Energy and sustainable development is one new core focus areas of the University of Vaasa. As an open research infrastructure VEBIC has a central role in realizing the new strategy.
The VEBIC platform includes laboratories and a program for energy and sustainable development research projects. The two laboratories are an internal combustion engine laboratory and a separate but interconnected laboratory for fuel development. Laboratories are located in the new laboratory building "EnergyLab" in Palosaari campus. The scope of research carried out in VEBIC will cover new energy technology and the impacts of its adoption on business and the wider society.
VEBIC is also an important investment. The University of Vaasa is investing over four million euros to create a new research infrastructure. Tekes and energy technology companies have granted a major part of the funding. The first stage of the VEBIC research infrastructure will be ready by the end of 2017.
