Registration for the Academic Year (old)

According to the Universities Act (558/2009), all university students must register as attending or non-attending each academic year. The registration duty applies to all degree students on bachelor, master and doctoral level.

Students who attend lectures, exercises or exams or write theses should register as attending. Also, students who complete minor subject studies or exchange studies outside the university must register as attending at their home university

Students who register as non-attending cannot take part in the courses organised by the university and they cannot be members of the Student Union. You may register as non-attending e.g. because of maternity leave. If you wish to continue your studies, you may change your registration to attending at any point during the academic year. In that case, contact Education Systems Services (edusys(a)uwasa.fi).

Please note that there is information on registering on the web pages for new students.

If you have not registered as attending/non-attending for over an academic year, you also need to submit an application for a re-activation of study right to the university. Check the application form for further instructions.

As of 2017, the University of Vaasa charges tuition fees according to the Finnish Parliament Decision. The fees apply to new students who start their studies in master's degree programmes in August 2017 or after that. According to the Universities Act, all the university students who have been admitted to programmes leading to a lower or higher university degree shall belong to the Student Union. The costs incurring from activities geared to implementing the purpose and remit of the student union shall be defrayed e.g. from membership fees, which are controlled by the university.

Registration period

  • The registration period for continuing students for 2023–2024 is from 1 June 2023 to 15 September 2023. For the spring term 2024, the registration period ends 31 January 2024. During this period, you must register as attending or non-attending.

Registration of new students

All international students have to register as a student of the university upon their arrival. Individual registration sessions will be arranged for new master's degree and exchange students at the beginning of each term. You will be asked to fill in a registration form in these meetings. You will also receive a username and temporary password for the university computers and university email in the meeting. Please note that some parts of the registration sessions are status-specific.

Master’s degree students are asked to present original application documents (degree certificate, transcript of records) in the registration sessions and a copy of the paid student union membership fee.

Doctoral students are asked to book a registration time at the Admission Services and present original application documents (degree certificate, transcript of records) and to fill in a registration form upon registration. Doctoral students are required to register as soon as their study right begins and annually at the beginning of each academic year.

For exchange students, separate registration sessions are organised at the beginning of the academic terms. In case exchange students have documents from the home university that are to be signed upon arrival, they can be signed at the registration.

It is important that you register as soon as possible after you arrive in Vaasa. You cannot register for courses or access any university information systems until you are registered as attending.

Please note, that degree students accepted at the University of Vaasa from (and after) August 2016 need to be enrolled as attending for the first academic year, according to a law concerning Finnish Higher Education.

Please see further guidelines about registration for new students.

Registration of continuing students

The registration period for continuing students is from 1 June to 15 September each year. For the spring term, the registration period ends 31 January.

During this period, you must register as attending or non-attending for each study right.

Remember to register for each study right separately

If you have several active degree study rights you have to register for each study right separately either as attending or non-attending.

You can register for the academic year in Oili service which you can find via student’s desktop in Peppi (click the Register for the academic year link on the home page). You will see all your active study rights for which you need to register in the Oili registration service. Remember to register for your all active study rights separately during the registration period to avoid the late registration fee.

If you are planning to complete courses associated with different study rights, register as attending for all the relevant study rights. You only need to pay the Student Union fee for the first study right for which you register as attending. If you are not planning to complete any courses associated with a particular study right, you can register as non-attending for that study right.

If you have a combined study right for both a Bachelor’s and a Master’s degree and you have not yet completed your Bachelor’s degree, register for your Bachelor’s degree study right in Oili.

Registration as attending

How to register

1) Registration in Peppi

You may register for the academic year and pay the student union membership fee for the academic year through Peppi system during the registration period from 1 June to 15 September. Log into Peppi and click the Register for the academic year link on the home page. You will be directed to Oili registration service. In Oili you can register as attending (present) or non-attending (absent) student and pay the Student Union fee. Registration will be automatically transferred to Peppi. If you have registered as non-attending for the current or previous academic term, you may also change your registration into attending through Peppi within the registration period.

Students are recommended to pay the student union membership fee in Peppi. Please note that if you make the payment by other means than in Peppi, your registration will not be updated in the student register automatically. Therefore, you need to submit a filled registration form to the university together with a receipt of the payment. You may bring or send the form and payment receipt by email to edusys(a)uwasa.fi.

2) Registration without using Peppi

If you can't register through Peppi system, you can register by returning a filled and signed registration form by email to edusys(a)uwasa.fi. If you register as attending, you should also enclose a receipt of the paid student union membership fee to the registration form. Please note that the receipt must also be attached if registration is done via mail, email or fax.

The student union membership fee should be paid to the account of the Student Union. For the account number and instructions, please contact ylioppilaskunta(a)vyy.fi.

Registration as non-attending

You can register as non-attending in the Peppi system. If you register as non-attending, you cannot attend courses, receive marks, or graduate from the university, but your user account remains active during your absence.

If you would like to continue your registration as non-attending from the previous year, you can do that in Peppi during the registration period from 1 June to 15 September. If you do not have access to Peppi, you should fill in a registration form and return it by email to edusys(a)uwasa.fi.

If you have registered as attending and would like to change your status to non-attending, you can do that during the registration period by contacting Education Systems Services at edusys(a)uwasa.fi.

Student union membership fee and Student healthcare fee

Student union membership fee

Student union membership fee is compulsory for all master's degree students who register as attending. Only those students who have registered as being present and paid the student union fee are allowed to take part in courses and exams and receive marks for the completed courses.

Student union membership fee is optional for doctoral students and incoming exchange students. As the exchange officially begins at the registration and accessing the university systems is only possible after registration, it is important that exchange students register as soon as possible after arrival.

Student union membership fee is paid at the same time with the registration for the academic year. The fee for the whole academic year 2022-2023 is 83 euros. If you register as attending for only autumn semester or spring semester the fee is 44 euros.

If your password or username for university information systems is not valid anymore, please contact IT Services.

If you do not have access to Peppi, you can pay the student union membership fee to the account of the Student Union. Further instructions are available from ylioppilaskunta(at)vyy.fi

After you have paid the student union membership fee, send the receipt of payment and the filled registration form to Education Systems Services at edusys(at)uwasa.fi

Student healthcare fee

University students must pay a healthcare fee to Kela.

You must pay the student healthcare fee if you are studying for a bachelor's or master's level university degree and have registered as attending for the current term. You must pay the fee even if you do not receive student financial aid or if you use occupational or other health services instead of the FSHS.

You are not billed for the student healthcare fee but must make sure to pay it in OmaKela for each academic term. Visit Kela’s website for information about how to pay the student healthcare fee.

The due date for paying the student healthcare fee is determined based on the date on which you register as attending.

  • The due date for the autumn term is 30 September, assuming that you register as attending by that date. If you register as attending for the autumn term on or after 1 October, the due date is 31 December.

  • For the spring term, the due date is 31 January provided that you have registered as attending by then. If you register as attending for the spring term on or after 1 February, the due date is 31 July.

If you have social security coverage in another EU/EEA country or in Switzerland or the United Kingdom, you do not have to pay the healthcare fee. However, you can use the FSHS’s services. Visit Kela’s website for information about how to proceed if you have social security coverage in another EU/EEA country or in Switzerland or the United Kingdom

Refunds of the student union membership fee

You may apply for a refund of the student union membership fee if you have paid the membership fee and graduated before the end of the registration period (i.e. in August or January). You may also apply for a refund if you have registered as non-attending or paid the fee incorrectly.

Further information on refunds is available on the Student Union website.

New doctoral students must register during the time given in the letter of admission and every year after that.

Late registration fee

Did you forget to register by the deadline?

Please note that the late registration fee is NOT paid to the same account as the student union membership fee.

Those who have not registered by the deadline will be removed from the student register.

A late registration fee of EUR 35 is collected from students who register as attending or non-attending after the deadline. This is an additional fee to the student union membership fee. The late registration fee applies also to doctoral students.

With the launch of the Peppi system, students now register for the academic year in relation to a specific study right that they have. This means that if you have not registered for one or more of your study rights, a late registration fee will be charged even if you have registered for your other study rights on time.

If you register late for more than one study right at a time, you will only be charged one late registration fee. If you then register for another study right, you will be charged a late registration fee again.

If you have not registered as attending/non-attending for over an academic year, you also need to submit an application for a re-activation of study right to the university. Check the form for further instructions.

The late registration fee is paid to the account of the University of Vaasa

Please note that the fee is NOT paid to the same account as the student union membership fee.

The application should be submitted to your study counsellor. The decision about activating the study right is made in your school.

Student card and sticker for the academic year

Please note that your application for the student card can be processed only after you have registered as attending the University of Vaasa and you have paid the student union membership fee. You will need your student number when ordering the student card.

Students who have paid the student union membership fee may collect the sticker of the academic year for their student card from the service office of the Student Union (in the Domus Bothnica building).
