The master’s programme in strategic business development (SBD) has decided to acknowledge students for their hard work with their master’s thesis and select the best thesis on a yearly basis.

The programme has collectively decided to acknowledge M.Sc. Lukumanu Iddrisu’s master’s thesis was the best in 2022. In his thesis, Lukumanu explores the practices involved in the development and implementation of an employer branding strategy in a multinational technology company.

Out of the five shortlisted candidates, two theses were evaluated 5 out of 5 on each dimension of the assessment rubric. The final decision between these two was made based on the academic value of the thesis.

– Lukumanu’s thesis was so well composed that it could be further developed into an academic article. That was an important factor when evaluating which thesis should receive this acknowledgement, says the SBD Programme Manager Jukka Partanen, associate professor at the School of Management.

Lukumanu’s thesis is a multiple case study consisting of three multinational technology companies and two consulting firms.

– For me, it was important to search for a topic that has relevance and I put a lot of effort into finding the right topic. Finally, the idea for my thesis came from an actual need from the company I was working for at the time, Lukumanu says.

The whole process from the background work to the writing of the thesis was done with an ambitious attitude.

– It requires persistence and character to be so determined throughout the thesis process. It has been very nice to see how Lukumanu is building the skill set needed to strive in an international environment. This master’s thesis is a significant step on his journey, says the supervisor of the thesis, Professor Marko Kohtamäki.

In 2022, around 30 students graduated from the master’s programme in strategic business development and the number is expected to grow this year. For Lukumanu, the SBD programme has given a different perspective to critically analyse business. The knowledge he has gained studying strategic business development and writing the thesis has provided the necessary expertise to do strategic work in a position where he can use his skill set.
