The University of Vaasa has developed an innovative career model which gives staff diverse possibilities to gain competence. The goal of the new career model that was set by the international scientific board of the university was to create the best academic career model in the world. No other university in Finland has a career model as extensive as this one which recognises the three different career paths in the university.

As a part of its strategy, the University of Vaasa is developing the openness and equality of its community to be attractive and one that people want to belong to.

– We want to give our staff the chance to build a diverse and successful university career with the possibility to develop oneself in an international and inspiring community, says Rector Jari Kuusisto.

The academic career paths include a tenure track path that qualifies for a professorship, a path in project and research work, and a path that emphasises teaching.

– The novelty is that this career model also enables staff that meet certain criteria a smooth transition from one career path to another through an internal application procedure. We aim to be flexible and encourage people in different stages of their careers, describes Vice-Rector Minna Martikainen.

This career model also brings new academic titles outside the career structure, such as Professor of Practice, Executive in Residence, and University of Vaasa Fellow. This is to increase collaboration with other organisations and companies.
