MOOC1001 Energy transition and sustainable economies

Uutisen oletuskuva
In this course, you will learn about energy transitions and sustainable economies. The energy transition is a change from an energy system that is dependent on fossil fuels to one built around renewable energy sources such as solar and wind power. Such an energy transition is crucial to combat environmental problems such as climate change. Environmental problems also require broader changes to the economic system as a whole. Sustainable economies are economic systems that support both environmental and social well-being.

The topics that we will cover during the course include:

Week 1: The need for energy transition
Week 2: Energy transition
Week 3: Changing the energy system
Week 4: Sustainable development
Week 5: Circular economy

This first week, we will look at some of the main environmental problems that humanity is facing, which require us to change both our energy systems and our economies more broadly: climate change and biodiversity loss. In week 2 of the course, you will learn about energy transitions and what changes we need to make to our current energy systems. In week 3, we will look at how we can make these transitions in the energy system a reality.

We will then move to look more broadly at sustainable economies and how energy transitions play a role in a larger change towards sustainability. In week 4, you will learn about sustainable development, with a particular focus on its link to energy transitions. In week 5, we will look at one promising development that could majorly change economies to be more sustainable: the circular economy.

This is a MOOC course, available for independent study on the FutureLearn platform. The course is provided by Hanken School of Economics in cooperation with Vaasa Higher Education Consortium. The course is open year round.

If you have any questions please contact Tommi Lehtonen (tommi.lehtonen@uwasa.fi) or Mikaela Krohn (mikaela.krohn@hanken.fi).

This course is produced by a group of higher education institutions in the Vaasa region in Finland: Hanken School of Economics, Novia University of Applied Science, University of Vaasa, VAMK University of Applied Sciences and Åbo Akademi University. The Vaasa region is a hub for knowledge as well as corporate activity around new energy solutions, renewable energy, and technology for energy transitions. In week 5 of the course, we present some cases from the Vaasa region that exemplify what the energy transition can look like in practice and everyday work.
