The prize is given annually for the best research paper on social economics that is presented in ASSA and it is awarded by the Association of Social Economics.

The paper is entitled "Selectivity and Transparency in Social Banking: Evidence from Europe” and Kalmi has co-authored it with professors Simon Cornée (Université de Rennes I) and Ariane Szafarz (Université Libre de Bruxelles). The article analyzes with balance sheet data how social banks, which lend to social enterprises and aim for broader social goals, differ from mainstream banks with respect to lending selectivity and transparency.

ASSA is the most important and largest annual conference in economics, where over 10,000 economists participate annually. Warren Samuels was an important US institutional economist, who died in 2011.
