How and when can I register for a course?

For all courses offered by the Language Centre, the students must register in advance on Peppi before the start of the course. The registration period for teaching in the autumn semester is from late August to early September.

How are students selected for a course?

Each language course has a maximum number of students that can take part, which depends on the course and the mode of delivery. The order in which students register does not affect whether a student is selected for the course.

For elementary and supplementary level courses, students are primarily selected on the basis of the number of study credits achieved. Elementary and supplementary level courses also have five reserved student places for students who plan to complete their minor in that language or who wish to study the language before taking part in an international student exchange. Each course has a limited number of student places and therefore a student is usually accepted on only one elementary level course per registration period.

The selection of students for advanced level language courses and academic writing courses is also based on the number of study credits achieved to date. The aim is to ensure that students who are close to graduating have the opportunity to complete their mandatory language courses. Staff can view each student’s study credits on Peppi. When allocating students to the groups, for students who are only completing a master´s degree at the University of Vaasa, the 180 study credits that would form part of a bachelor´s degree are considered in addition to their actual study credits.

How do I know if I’ve been accepted on a course?

Once you have been accepted on a course, your registration status for that course on Peppi will be shown as green (“accepted”). If you have not been accepted, your registration status will be shown as red “not accepted”. Staff manually produce a reserve list for each language course, and the information is passed on to the teachers. If places become available on a course, the teacher will contact the students on the reserve list.

Confirm your place by attending the first lecture for the course. Attendance at the first lecture is mandatory. If you have been accepted on a course but you are unable to take part, please notify the course teacher. This allows the teacher to give your place on the course to another student on the reserve list. If you are on the reserve list, be proactive and check with the teacher at the start of the course if there are any free places.

If you forgot to register or you were not accepted on a course

If you forgot to register for a course in time or the group was full, you are nevertheless recommended to contact the teacher and check if there are any free places left.
