The University of Vaasa has received funding from the Strategic Research Council (SRC) established within the Research Council of Finland for two research projects as part of research consortia. The TRANSFORM-AI project investigates how artificial intelligence, intangible capital, and leadership can be combined to renew working life, strengthen business competitiveness, and support public sector decision-making. The SPACECONOMY project, in turn, addresses fragmentation in Finland’s space ecosystem by fostering innovation, sustainability, and collaboration across sectors.

Arto Ojala, Professor of International Business, has been appointed as a Distinguished Visiting Professor at Kyoto University. He will begin his appointment in February, when he will travel to Japan to teach a new course. The appointment follows Professor Ojala's long-standing research and teaching collaboration with Kyoto University.

During the anniversary celebration on Friday 26 January, the University of Vaasa awarded the research and teaching acts of the year. The Research Act of the Year 2023 was awarded to professors Annukka Jokipii and Harri Jalonen. Programme Manager and Assistant Professor Aušrinė Šilenskytė got the Teaching Act of the Year 2023. In addition, University Teacher Heini Pensar received the Good Teacher award and University Teacher Tahir Ali an honorary mention from the Students' Union of the University of Vaasa.

Roman Filenko’s doctoral dissertation examines why international joint ventures (IJV) are terminated and how this affects the parent firms. His research highlights that parent firms have varying reasons for choosing sell-off, acquisition or liquidation of IJVs. The specific mode of termination does not impact the value of the parent company in the same way as the characteristics of the operation market do.
