The remote work debate often focuses only on leadership or the employee, but according to a new doctoral dissertation from the University of Vaasa, the prerequisites for success are found in a broader context. Johanna Jansson's research in the field of human resource management reveals that successful remote work is built on three foundations: overall organisational design, the supervisor-subordinate relationship, and the employee's own role. When these three foundations are in balance, both company performance and employee well-being can be promoted simultaneously.

How are pioneers leveraging generative AI in product development and innovation – and what kind of capabilities and leadership does it require? The University of Vaasa, JAMK University of Applied Sciences, and VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland will research AI and leadership with funding from Business Finland in autumn 2025. The project will run from 1 September 2025 to 30 August 30, 2027, with a total budget exceeding one million euros, most of which is funded by Business Finland.

Professor Emerita of Human Resource Management Riitta Viitala (University of Vaasa), University Lecturer Kirsi Lehto (University of Vaasa), and Postdoctoral Researcher Jenni Kantola (University of Jyväskylä), have received an Outstanding Paper Award from the international publisher Emerald. The recognition was granted for their research article on Finnish municipal leaders' perceptions of strategic human resource management.

According to a doctoral dissertation by Tania Biswas, strong organisational support and favourable working conditions improve their well-being at work, leading to improved job outcomes and reduced turnover. However, high-risk environments and conflicts between work and personal life can reduce well-being, leading to poor performance and an increased desire to quit.

During the anniversary celebration on Friday 26 January, the University of Vaasa awarded the research and teaching acts of the year. The Research Act of the Year 2023 was awarded to professors Annukka Jokipii and Harri Jalonen. Programme Manager and Assistant Professor Aušrinė Šilenskytė got the Teaching Act of the Year 2023. In addition, University Teacher Heini Pensar received the Good Teacher award and University Teacher Tahir Ali an honorary mention from the Students' Union of the University of Vaasa.
