Cyberattacks on wireless networks pose a threat to businesses and society, with risks such as ship rerouting and flight delays. Through the TRUST project, Mid Sweden University’s STC Research Center, in collaboration with the University of Vaasa in Finland, is developing an AI solution to detect intrusions.

During the anniversary celebration on Monday 27 January, the University of Vaasa awarded the research and teaching acts of the year. The Research Act of the Year 2024 was awarded to Professor of Energy Technology Maciej Mikulski, Head of Financial Services Elina Blomqvist, Laboratory Manager Sonja Heikkilä and Dean of the School of Technology and Innovations Raine Hermans. University teachers Susanna Mantila and Mia Juthman got the Teaching Act of the Year 2024. In addition, University Lecturer Juho-Pekka Mäkipää received the Good Teacher award and University Lecturer Teemu Mäenpää an honorary mention from the Students' Union of the University of Vaasa.

Increasingly occurring GPS jamming in Finland disrupts the daily civilian activities, posing major navigational challenges. A new patented method using Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellites and massive Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO) antennas addresses these location vulnerability issues, presenting means for precise navigation even where traditional global navigation satellite systems (GNSS) fail. This breakthrough was verified in a recent doctoral dissertation by Mahmoud Elsanhoury, from the University of Vaasa.

Professor Heidi Kuusniemi has received the University of Vaasa Science Communication Award. In addition, the University of Vaasa granted two honorary mentions for excellent science communication to professors Miadreza Shafie-khah and Sami Vähämaa. The University also granted the University of Vaasa Innovation Award for the first time in its history. It was given to professor Mohammed Elmusrati and project researcher Mahmoud Elsanhoury.

In his doctoral dissertation at the University of Vaasa, Sayawu Diaba presents unique machine-learning algorithms for evaluating, detecting, and classifying cyberattacks on smart grids.

The University of Vaasa distributed awards for research and teaching at its anniversary celebration on 27 January. Associate Professor Tatiana Garanina and Assistant Professor Mikko Ranta received the Research Act of the Year award. Associate Professors in Marketing Hanna Leipämaa-Leskinen and Henna Syrjälä received the Teaching Act of the Year award. In addition, University Teacher Laura Havinen was awarded the Hyvä opettaja (Good Teacher) Award and Assistant Professor Tuomas Huikkola a commendation for his interactive teaching by the University of Vaasa Student Union. The ceremony also included commendations by the Rector for Klaus Grobys, Associate Professor in Finance, and Marko Kohtamäki, Professor of Strategy, and his research team.
