A consortium led by the University of Vaasa has been awarded significant Horizon Europe funding for a major research and innovation project that moves long‑distance shipping closer to a zero‑carbon future. The H4PERION – Hydrogen FOR Performance Enhancement and Reliable Ice OperatioN – project will, for the first time, demonstrate in practice how a large vessel can operate with a hydrogen‑capable internal combustion engine (ICE). This marks an important milestone in clean maritime technology.

Helka Kalliomäki has started as Professor of Innovation Policy at the University of Vaasa in March. Her professorship is situated in the discipline of Regional Studies and is closely connected to the interdisciplinary field of innovation policy studies at the interface of urban and regional development. She is particularly interested in the role that cities and regions play in societal change, and how diverse actors can work together in an impactful way towards a sustainable future.

The PEAK project, coordinated by the University of Vaasa in collaboration with Aktion Österbotten, has concluded after two years of work focused on the transition towards a carbon‑neutral regional energy system in Ostrobothnia. The project combined technical analysis, stakeholder engagement and business development to produce region‑specific knowledge supporting future energy system development.

English serves as the primary language of instruction, but Finnish is systematically integrated into studies so that language supports both learning and the development of work life skills.
