Programme-specific criteria in joint admission

In addition to the general admission criteria, all the Master's programmes have their own admission criteria. The admission criteria contains information about the selection process and evaluation of applications. They also state, for example, the number of students selected to the programme annually.

Students apply to studies offered in English through the spring's first national joint application round. The application period is the 3rd - 17th January 2024 at 15:00 (UTC+2).

University of Vaasa reserves the right to decide whether a degree and/or higher education institution (HEI) meet our requirements or not.

Master's Degree Programme in Finance

Students are eligible for admission to the two-year Master’s Degree Programme in Finance (120 ECTS) if they have completed a Bachelor’s degree on an appropriate field. The programme leads to a degree of Master of Science in Economics and Business Administration and approximately 20 students are accepted to the programme annually.

If the applicant has already accepted a study place in this programme through the rolling admission in this academic year, their application will not be processed in this selection.

Eligibility

To be considered for admission to the Master's Programme in Finance, the applicant must fulfil the following criteria:

1. Scope of the degree: A 3- or 4-year Bachelor degree at higher education institution (HEI) level

2. Prior studies at Bachelor level or higher in the core areas of the programme in case the background degree is not completed in the core area.

  • For the Finance Programme these areas are: finance, economics, accounting, mathematics and statistic.
  • Other than Business graduates: degree on an approriate field if candidates can demostrate a proper background in business studies as follows: minimum of 35 ECTS in business studies (of which at least 25 ECTS in finance, economics, accounting, mathematics and statistic and/or business administration) is required.

3. Applicant’s performance (i.e. GPA) in previous studies, including the thesis or final report (i.e. the final assignment students must complete in circumstances where a thesis is not used).

  • The overall grade (GPA) and the grade of the thesis for a Bachelor’s degree from higher education institution (HEI) should be at least ‘good’ 3,0/5,0 (ECTS grading), or equivalent in the systems not using the ECTS.

4. English language proficiency as instructed in admission criteria

Selection

Applications that satisfy the above eligibility criteria will be put through a subsequent evaluation process that will determine which applicants are selected for admission to the programme. The criteria used in the selection process are listed below in order of importance. The selection process uses an objective system of points for the evaluation of candidates (in total 40 points). The weight of each of the criteria is following:

1. Applicant’s amount of relevant prior studies and the performance in these (including the thesis or final work) (30 points)
2. Applicant's amount of international experience or/and work experience in areas relevant to the programme (5 points)
3. Applicant's motivation (5 points)

Not yet graduated?

Applicants, who have not graduated from the degree used for eligibility to the programme by the time the application period ends, may be conditionally accepted to the programme. In the cases of conditional acceptance, the final acceptance is made and the right to study is granted only when the applicant graduates and receives the degree certificate with the required grades by 11 July 2024. Evidence of the completed degree needs to be presented to the University by 11 July 2024 at 15:00 (UTC+3). Applicants who are conditionally accepted are informed on the conditions, and updated information on the acceptance is sent to the applicants who have submitted a copy of the degree certificate and final transcript of records by the deadline.

Master's Degree Programme in International Business

Students are eligible for admission to the two-year Master’s Degree Programme in International Business (MIB programme) if they have completed a Bachelor’s degree on an appropriate field. The MIB programme is open both for international and Finnish applicants. The programme leads to a Master of Science degree in Economics and Business Administration. Approximately 30 students are accepted to the programme each year.

If the applicant has already accepted a study place in this programme through the rolling admission in this academic year, their application will not be processed in this selection.

Eligibility

To be considered for admission to the programme, the applicant must fulfil the following criteria:

1. Scope of the degree

  • A 3- or 4-year Bachelor degree at higher education institution (HEI) level

2. Prior studies at Bachelor level or higher in the core areas of the programme in case the background degree is not completed in the core area.

  • For the MIB programme these areas are: international business, marketing, and management and organization.
  • Other than Business graduates: degree on an appropriate field focusing on international aspects (for example international relations, international politics, international communications) if candidates can demonstrate a proper background in business studies as follows: minimum of 35 ECTS in business studies (of which at least 25 ECTS in international business, marketing and/or management) is required.

3. Applicant’s performance (i.e. GPA) in previous studies, including the thesis or ‘final report’ (i.e. the final assignment students must complete in circumstances where a thesis is not used)

  • The overall grade (GPA) and the grade of the thesis for a Bachelor’s degree from higher education institution (HEI) should be at least ‘good’ 3,0/5,0 (ECTS grading), or equivalent in the systems not using the ECTS.

4. English language proficiency as instructed in admission criteria

Students are eligible for admission if they have completed a Bachelor's Degree on an appropriate field. The application is open both for international and Finnish applicants. The aim is that half of the accepted students are international. Studies lead to a Master of Science degree in Economics and Business administration. Approximately 30 students are accepted to the programme each year.

If the applicant has already accepted a study place in Industrial Management through the rolling admission in this academic year, their application will not be processed in this selection.

Eligibility

To be considered for admission to Industrial Management, the applicant must fulfill the following criteria:

1. Scope of the Degree

  •  a 3-4 year Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) in an appropriate field at higher education institution (HEI) level

The appropriate fields include e.g. Business Studies or Technology. Previous degree/studies must include courses in business studies regardless of the major subject in the degree.

2. Prior studies at Bachelor level or higher in the core areas of the programme in case the previous degree is not completed in a core area.

3. Applicant's performance (i.e. GPA) in previous studies, including the thesis or 'final report' (i.e. the final assignment students must complete in circumstances where a thesis is not used).

  • The overall grade (GPA) and the grade of the thesis for a Bachelor's degree from higher education institution (HEI) should be at least ‘good’ 3,0/5,0 (ECTS grading), or equivalent in the systems not using the ECTS. 

4. English language proficiency as instructed in the admission criteria

The accepted students may be required to complete supplementary studies (maximum 60 ECTS) to supplement the skills and knowledge acquired during their previous studies to the level required in the Master level studies.

The applicants must graduate (have a degree certificate) from the degree that is used for eligibility to the programme by the 11th July 2024. Applicants who have not graduated from the degree used for eligibility to the programme by the time the application period ends may be conditionally accepted. In the cases of conditional acceptance, the final acceptance is made and the right to study is granted only when the applicant graduates and receives the degree certificate with the required grades by the 11th July 2024. 3. Applicant’s performance (i.e. GPA) in previous studies, including the thesis or ‘final report’ (i.e. the final assignment students must complete in circumstances where a thesis is not used).

Students are eligible for admission to Robotics if they have completed a Bachelor’s Degree in an appropriate field. The application is open both for international and Finnish applicants. The aim is that half of the accepted students are international. Studies lead to a Master of Science degree in Technology. Approximately 50 students are accepted to Robotics each year: 25 to study on Vaasa campus and 25 in the city of Pori.

Eligibility

To be considered for admission to Robotics, the applicant must fulfill the following criteria:

1. Scope of the Degree

  • a 3-4 year Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) in an appropriate field at higher education institution (HEI) level

To be considered for admission to Sustainable and Autonomous Systems, the applicant must fulfill the following criteria:

1. Scope of the Degree

  • A university level Bachelor's degree or higher in one of the following degree programmes: Communications engineering, Electronics or Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Automation engineering, or similar. The Bachelor’s degree should be equivalent to 180 ECTS corresponding to at least three years of full-time study. Bachelor’s degree must have been granted by an academic, higher education institution, which enables the applicant to apply for higher university degree (master) studies in their home country. Applicants with other degrees are not eligible.

2. English language proficiency as instructed in admission criteria

Selection

In the cases of conditional acceptance, the final acceptance is made and the right to study is granted only when the applicant graduates and receives the degree certificate with the required grades by the 11th July 2024. Evidence of the completed degree needs to be presented to the University by the 11th July 2024 at 15:00 (UTC+3). Applicants who are conditionally accepted are informed of the conditions, and updated information on the acceptance is sent to the applicants who have submitted a copy of the degree certificate and final transcript of records by the deadline.
