The position had twelve applicants, five of which were interviewed. Tauno Kekäle had not initially applied for the position, but was contacted and asked to do so, states mayor Markku Lumio who is chairman of the board of he Vaasa Univeristy of Applied Sciences.

The vote was held on 24.5, and was unanimous, according to Lumio.
