The Centre for Immersion and Multilingualism you can find at the Department of Scandinavian Languages, the University of Vaasa.
At the Department of Scandinavian Languages research has been done on bi- and multilingualism since the end of the 1970s. The growing number of courses in this field led to the establishment of a donor chair in second language acquisition and the foundation of the Centre for immersion and multilingualism.
The main task of the Immersion Centre is to do research in the area of bi- and multilingualism, paying special attention to early total immersion in Swedish. The immersion researchers also take part in the education and in-service training of students and teachers in the field of multilingualism and give information on immersion and multilingualism.
The activity at the Centre for Immersion and multilingualism has from the very start taken place in close cooperation with Canadian and Catalan immersion researchers. The Centre also cooperates with other European researchers in European Institute of Immersion Teaching.
In addition, the researchers at the Immersion Centre have started a series of international immersion conferences (European Conference on Immersion Programs) and created an electronic discussion forum on immersion (LIME).
