Registration upon Arrival
All international students have to register as a student of the University upon their arrival. Individual registration sessions will be arranged for the new international students in the beginning of each semester. The new students are asked to fill in a registration form and an emergency-contact form in these meetings. Students are also given a username and temporary password for the university computers and university e-mail. Some parts of the registration process are, however, status-specific.
Master’s degree students are asked to present original application documents (degree certificate, transcript of records) upon registration. Master’s degree students are also asked to fill in a registration form and given payment details for the Student Union fee. This payment is compulsory for Master’s degree students.
Please note that the deadline for new Master’s degree students for handing in a completed registration form and presenting a receipt of the Student Union membership payment is 2 September.
Doctoral students are asked to present original application documents (degree certificate, transcript of records) and to fill in a registration form upon registration. Doctoral students are required to register as soon as their study right begins and also annually in the beginning of each academic year.
Registration for the Next Academic Years
All students have to register at the university each year either as attending or non-attending. Only those who have registered as being present and paid the Student Union fee are allowed to take part in courses and exams, and receive marks for the completed courses. Please note also that only the students who have registered as being present for the semester in question may receive their degree certificates and graduate from the University.
Registration period for the academic year 2011-2012 is 1 June – 15 September 2011. Those who have not registered by the deadline will be removed from the student register. In order to put the student back on the student register (i.e. to active the study right), a fee of 35 euros will be charged. Please see section 'Late Registration' below for more information about the re-registration fee.
The Student Union membership fee for Master’s degree students is 110.00 euros (incl. fee for the services of YTHS, i.e. Finnish Student Health Service). You may pay half of the annual fee (55 euros) if you register as being absent for the autumn semester and present for the spring semester.
The Student Union membership fee for doctoral students is 35.00 euros and it is optional. The fee entitles doctoral students to the services of the Student Union. Please note that the fee does not entitle the doctoral students to health care at YTHS, subsidised meals or discounts on travelling tickets.
Please note that students must be registered as attending in order to receive the degree certificate. Students who will graduate in August must register as attending at least for the autumn semester. If the student graduates in August, registration for the academic year must be done before the graduation date.
