The Vaasa School of Economics was established in 1968 as a college upheld by a private foundation. In 1977 the School of Economics became a state institution and by 1991 it had developed into a multidisciplinary university. Since the beginning of 2010 the University of Vaasa has been an independent public corporation university. Today, in addition to a strong emphasis on business know-how, the fields of research and education of the University of Vaasa are in technology, public administration, communication and languages. The strategy of the university is to be a multidisciplinary, business-oriented science university.
Within technology the emphasis is on energy technology and the decentralized production of electric energy. Within the administrative sciences the core areas of know-how are comparative study methods and the ethics of public administration. The core competence within languages and communication is in the fields of multilingualism, language immersion and language for special purposes.
The operation of the university has established itself as a key factor in the success of the Ostrobothnia region. Simultaneously, the university is an international actor – an increasing number of its degree students come from overseas. Equally, its international student exchange programmes are lively and research co-operation contacts frequent.
The fundraising of the university’s foundation equity was ended on June 30th 2011. Nevertheless, it is still possible to contribute to the support of teaching and research at the University of Vaasa and, thus, influence the future of the university and its surrounding region. For instance, private contributions to the university of sums between 850 € and 150 000 € are income tax-deductable until the end of 2012. You can also specify the intended use of your contribution.
