Exchange Students

Exchange Students

The University of Vaasa does not have any special admission requirements for students who are coming to Vaasa through a bilateral university exchange programme (e.g. ERASMUS, NORDPLUS and bilateral agreements). Please check from the coordinator or international office of your home institution whether they have any special requirements concerning your stay at the University of Vaasa.

All exchange students to the University of Vaasa need to be nominated by their home institutions. The nomination of the exchange students should be done electronically using Moveon e-nomination. A link to the electronic application form will be sent directly to the nominated students.

When the student has filled in the electronic application form, he/she should print it, sign it and send it with the required documents to the University of Vaasa.

To be enclosed with the application:

  • Copy of a passport or of an official ID
  • Transcript of records from home university (official or a printout from the database)
  • Learning Agreement (you can use the form of your home university or the form available here)
  • CV (please use Europass form)

Please note that the University of Vaasa does not require official language tests from exchange students. However, as many courses for exchange students are the same courses that our degree students complete, the exchange students should have similar level of English that is required of our degree students. Please see below the different ways our degree students have to prove their proficiency in English:

  • Official TOEFL -test with minimum score of 550 in paper-based test, 213 in computer-based test or 79 in iBT (The University of Vaasa TOEFL code is 0647)
  • Official IELTS test (Academic) with minimum score of 6.0 (each section minimum 5.5)
  • Official Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE) with pass grade A, B or C
  • Official Certificate in Advanced English (CAE) with pass grade A, B or C
  • Official National Certificate of Language Proficiency (arranged by Finnish National Board of Education) with an average language skill level 5 or 6 in the English language
  • Certificate of secondary education completed in English in EU / EEA countries, United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand or South Africa
  • Certificate of English as the A language (i.e. mother tongue) as a part of International Baccalaureate degree, or as the LI (i.e. mother tongue) or the LII (i.e. as the official language) as a part of European Baccalaureate degree
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree (or equivalent) completed in English in one of the EU / EEA countries, United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand or South Africa. If the language of instruction (English) is not clearly stated in the degree certificate, it is to be verified by a certificate signed by a university official
  • English as the major subject in Bachelor's or Master's degree
  • Certificate of English as a foreign language in a Finnish university degree

 

Information about the courses for exchange students in academic year 2011-2012 can be found at 'Studies for Exchange Students'. The courses for the academic year 2012-2013 will be updated on the same website during the spring.

If you plan to take some of the courses in which the period of study is not confirmed (autumn/spring), you are free to do so, but we kindly ask you to be prepared to modify your Learning Agreement in case of cancellation or limited availability.

Exchange students should return the application by 15 June (autumn semester / full year) or 31 October (spring semester).

Exchange students are personally responsible for obtaining a personal insurance for themselves and for their personal belongings. The insurance should be obtained before arrival to Finland, and it should cover costs resulting from illness or an accident (doctor and hospital charges, including medical treatment and hospitalisation, medication, and costs resulting from interruption of the exchange). The insurance should cover the whole duration of the stay. The exchange students should also obtain an insurance for personal belongings and third party liability.

Fees

There are no tuition fees for exchange students. However, some exchange students choose to pay the Student Union membership fee. Membership entitles for several student discounts and student health care.
