All of the Faculties and Departments of the University of Vaasa are located in the beautiful maritime campus area in Palosaari. The area is an interesting combination of old and new.
The new buildings Tervahovi and Luotsi were completed in 1994. They were designed in the spirit of the former province architect Axel Setterberg, who designed the most important public buildings of Vaasa in 1860. This new campus area was designed by architects Käpy and Simo Paavilainen.
Area’s old buildings include Fabriikki and Konttori, as well as Puuvillatalot, where also the University guest housing is located. Some of the old apartments of the cotton mill’s workers are now in use for student accommodation.
In 1856, councillor of commerce August Alexander Levòn founded Vaasan Puuvilla Manufaktuuri, Inc., the world’s northernmost cotton mill, by the sea in Palosaari, a region in Vaasa. The mill of neo-Gothic style with its towers and unplastered red-brick walls was built according to a design taken from Manchester. At that time, the deep-water harbour of Vaasa was located in the Palosaari area, right next to where the campus area is today.
