English Studies at the University of Vaasa offer a friendly environment which, in the tradition of liberal arts colleges, offers a variety of studies within the humanities.
Our international staff represent a wide variety of academic interests and have experience of several different universities. Our teaching is closely connected to our research in the fields of translation studies, cultural studies, and traditional literary scholarship.
The curriculum of English Studies is divided into three central areas of interest
• Culture and literature
• Culture and translation
• Sociolinguistics
Interdisciplinarity makes it possible to achieve a broad understanding of the English language and its linguistic, cultural and literary aspects. In this context, it is also possible to study the implications of English as the new "world language."
The department admits 30 major and 30 minor English students each year.
History of English Studies (formerly the department of English)
The department of English was originally founded to supplement and support other subjects, offering practical English teaching to other departments. This included teaching English as a minor subject within the former Faculty of Humanities (now the Faculty of Philosophy), and also English for Special Purposes for groups of business students and administration students. ESP is still one of the teaching strengths of the department.
We seek motivated students, both Finnish and Swedish-speaking!
